Common questions about this trip

  • East Coast vs National pass — which?

If you're only doing Sydney–Cairns: East Coast (from $339, max $475 for 30 days + 7 free). If you also want to add Adelaide/Uluru/Darwin: National (from $449 for 15 days). Most backpackers use East Coast.
  • How far ahead do I need to book each leg?

24-48 hours is usually fine, except for peak season (Dec-Jan, Easter, school holidays) when popular routes book out 3-5 days ahead. The app makes it easy.
  • Greyhound vs Premier — what's the difference?

Greyhound runs more routes more frequently and has the polished app. Premier is cheaper (~30% less) but routes are limited and seats are basic. Both have their fans. Greyhound if you value flexibility, Premier if you're tight on cash.
  • Do overnight buses actually work?

Honestly? They're rough. Reclining seats, but you'll still wake up sore. Useful for one or two transfers (Sydney → Byron, Brisbane → Airlie) to save accommodation cost. Don't make them your only sleep plan for the whole 3 weeks.
