By day three you've got a WhatsApp group called "Byron Crew 🌴" that's still buzzing three years later. You'll fly to Berlin for one of their weddings. You'll crash on a couch in Toronto. You'll be in the chat when someone's planning their next trip, and you'll be on it.

On a fully guided tour you share the bus, the guide and the group dinners with the same crew (usually 8 to 25 people, mostly 18 to 30). On Travel Mates you travel solo and meet other backpackers at every hostel, in the K'gari convoy and on the boat.
