Picture a beachfront surf camp with a lesson on each of your two days, then you behind the wheel of a 4WD on Seventy-Five Mile Beach, then casting off on a racing maxi yacht and falling asleep on deck, then floating over the outer Great Barrier Reef. Twenty-eight days between Sydney and Cairns, with every headline East Coast moment in one booking: a 3-day Spot X surf camp (two nights, two lessons), a canoe through the glassy Noosa Everglades, the K'gari 4WD safari, two nights sailing the Whitsundays, two nights on Magnetic Island, a waterfall day in the Atherton Tablelands and a full day on the outer reef. Fancy a skydive? Mission Beach is an optional add-on with a transfer from Cairns.
Semi-guided means the big days run with professional guides and a group, and the days between are yours at each stop: a second surf, a long lunch, the night out nobody planned. The route is fixed and sequenced so nothing clashes; only your start date is flexible. We pre-book the bus pass (overnight on the long haul from Rainbow Beach to Airlie Beach), all 25 nights of beds, two overnight coaches, every adventure and 18 meals. Open-dated, valid 12 months, starting every Monday, Wednesday and Friday from Sydney or Cairns. Book solo. The crew turns up on the surf camp bunks, in the K'gari convoy and on the boat deck.

Stop 1
Two nights to land, shake off the flight and start the coast with the city at its best. Ferry to Manly with the Harbour Bridge sliding past, walk the Bondi-to-Coogee clifftops, watch the Opera House sails catch the last light from the harbour steps, and day-trip to the Blue Mountains if the legs want it. Collect your bus pass and itinerary pack, meet the dorm, and relax: every stop ahead is booked and sequenced, so there's nothing to plan. On the evening of day 3 the overnight bus heads north.
Stop 2
First stop north and the smartest way to learn: a beachfront surf camp at Arrawarra. The overnight bus puts you down at the camp's own bus stop in the early hours of day 4, check-in is mid-afternoon, so the day is yours for the beach and the campfire while you settle in, and the break is a barefoot walk from your bunk. Two lessons on forgiving learner waves with all the gear, every meal at camp, campfire nights with your crew. You leave reading waves and popping up, a real skill you carry up the whole coast. An early coach on the morning of day 6 takes you on to Byron.
Stop 3
You roll into Byron already surfing, so these four nights are pure Byron. Sunrise at the Cape Byron lighthouse, among the first on the mainland to see the sun come up. Markets, beach bars and drum-circle sunsets. A hinterland day for waterfalls. Humpbacks pass June to November, and the surf is free whenever you want it, because you've got the skills now. Four free days at the coast's most famous stop.
Stop 4
Two nights on the coast's most polished stretch, with the trip's quiet showstopper in the middle: a guided canoe through the Noosa Everglades, one of only two everglade systems on earth, where the water sits so still the paperbarks mirror themselves on the surface. Walk the national park track past dozing koalas to the longboarders at Tea Tree Bay, graze Hastings Street, swim the calm main beach. Then get ready for sand in everything you own: on the afternoon of day 12 the coach carries you on to Rainbow Beach for the night, a short walk from the briefing that starts K'gari the next morning.
Stop 5
Three days where the highway is a beach and you're driving it, starting with a 7am briefing in Rainbow Beach. Tag-along means you and your crew share the wheel in convoy, a lead guide up front calling the lines over the radio. Swim Lake McKenzie's silica-white shallows, float the length of crystal-clear Eli Creek, climb the rusting SS Maheno, soak in the Champagne Pools and hike the sandblow to Lake Wabby. Nights are beach camping: fire, a proper feed, stars by the thousand, maybe dingo tracks past the tents by morning. Meals and camping gear sorted; bring or hire a sleeping bag. Back on the mainland mid-afternoon on day 15, you board the overnight bus to Airlie Beach.
Stop 6
The overnight bus lands you in Airlie Beach on the morning of day 16: a night to reset at the lagoon and marina bars. On day 17 you board a racing maxi yacht for two nights among the 74 Whitsunday Islands. Snorkel the fringing reef, climb to the Hill Inlet lookout as the tide swirls turquoise over white sand, and walk Whitehaven Beach, 98% pure silica that squeaks underfoot. Sunset drinks on deck, sleep under the stars, wake up already anchored in paradise. Back ashore on day 19 with two more Airlie nights to soak up the afterglow with the boat crew.
Stop 7
A short ferry from Townsville and the pace drops in the best way. Hire an open-top Barbie car to loop the island's 23 bays, snorkel the fringing reef straight off Geoffrey Bay, and take the Forts Walk at golden hour for some of the best odds in Australia of spotting a wild koala wedged in a gum. Granite boulders, near-empty beaches, sunsets that land on the water. Two nights, one full island day in the middle.
Stop 8
Five nights and six days for the finale, and each one earns its keep. Your guided Atherton Tablelands day swims the rock pools below Millaa Millaa Falls through World Heritage rainforest. On day 27 you spend a full day on the outer Great Barrier Reef: turtles, rays, giant clams, coral in every colour, buffet lunch aboard. The spare days are yours: the optional Mission Beach skydive (transfer from Cairns, landing on the sand), the Daintree and Cape Tribulation as an add-on, or the Esplanade lagoon and night markets for a last hurrah with the mates you didn't have four weeks ago.

The spare days are yours: the optional Mission Beach skydive (transfer from Cairns, landing on the sand), the Daintree and Cape Tribulation as an add-on, or the Esplanade lagoon and night markets. Stop 3
Two nights in Airlie Beach at the lagoon and marina bars, then on day 10 you board a racing maxi yacht for two nights among the 74 Whitsunday Islands. Back ashore late morning on day 12, and that evening the overnight bus carries you south to Rainbow Beach.
Stop 4
Off the overnight bus into Rainbow Beach on the morning of day 13, with the day free to wander the town and a bed here tonight. At the 7am briefing on day 14 you're onto the world's largest sand island, driving it yourself, tag-along style, sharing the wheel of a 4WD in convoy while a lead guide calls the lines over the radio. Swim Lake McKenzie's silica-white shallows, float down Eli Creek's glass-clear current, scramble over the rusted SS Maheno wreck, fizz about in the Champagne Pools and hike the sandblow to Lake Wabby. Nights are beach camping: campfire, a proper feed, and 75-Mile Beach as tomorrow's highway. Meals and camping gear sorted, bring or hire a sleeping bag, then just drive and swim. Back at Rainbow Beach mid-afternoon on day 16, you've a bed here again that night, then on day 17 it's a short hop south to Noosa.

Four free days, then on day 23 the coach carries you south to the surf camp.

Two lessons on forgiving learner waves with all the gear, every meal at camp, campfire nights with your crew. You leave reading waves and popping up, a real skill to take home. After check-out on day 25 the beach is yours for the day, then the overnight coach south to Sydney leaves late that evening.
Stop 8
Off the overnight coach on the morning of day 26, two nights to finish with the city at its best. Ferry to Manly with the Harbour Bridge sliding past, walk the Bondi-to-Coogee clifftops, watch the Opera House sails catch the last light from the harbour steps, and day-trip to the Blue Mountains if the legs want it. Then a last hurrah with the mates you didn't have four weeks ago.
