Why Sri Lanka

Why travel to Sri Lanka?

A lot in a small island

Ancient rock fortresses, misty tea country, wild elephants and surf beaches, all within a day's drive of each other. Twelve days covers the highlights.

The Ella train

The hill-country line through the tea estates to Ella is one of the most famous train rides in the world. Hang out the open door and wave at the pickers.

Wildlife

Udawalawe is known for its wild elephant herds. Off Mirissa, blue whales and dolphins pass roughly November to April.

Surf and south coast

Weligama's gentle beach break is a classic place to learn. Mirissa has palm-lined coves and sunset cafés.

Temples and tea

Kandy's Temple of the Tooth, cave temples and Buddhist monasteries, then a cup of the island's own tea where it's grown.

Two monsoons, always a dry side

December to April is dry on the south and west coasts and in the hills. May to September suits the east coast.
