Brisbane: Gateway to the Sand Islands

Brisbane's secret weapon isn't in the city, it's offshore. Moreton Bay hides two of the world's biggest sand islands, which means wild dolphins, sunken shipwrecks you can snorkel, sand dunes you can toboggan at 70km/h, and lakes stained amber by tea-trees, all within a day trip of your hostel.

Get to know Brisbane

South Bank: the free beach in the middle of a city

Every list of things to do in Brisbane starts at South Bank Parklands, and fair enough, it's a man-made lagoon with real sand, palm trees and lifeguards, sitting directly opposite the CBD skyline. Streets Beach costs exactly nothing, which makes it the best-value swim on the East Coast. Around it you've got free barbecues, the bougainvillea-draped Grand Arbour walk, weekend markets and the Wheel of Brisbane spinning overhead. Grab a cheap feed from the markets, claim a patch of grass, and watch the CityCats hum past on the river. Half the backpackers in Brisbane are here on any sunny arvo. Join them.

Story Bridge and the Kangaroo Point cliffs

Brisbane's skyline moment is the Story Bridge, one of only a few bridges on Earth you can legally climb. Do it at sunset and you'll get the river bending gold beneath you, the CBD lighting up, and Moreton Bay glowing on the horizon. Skint? The Kangaroo Point cliffs deliver a near-identical view for free: walk the riverside boardwalk from the CBD, watch rock climbers scale the pink volcanic cliff face, and settle in at the clifftop park with a BYO picnic as the bridge lights come on. For the wide shot, bus up to Mt Coot-tha lookout, the whole city to the bay, no ticket required.

Moreton Island: the day trip that ruins other day trips

About 75 minutes by ferry from Brisbane sits Moreton Island, the world's third-largest sand island, and the reason you don't skip this city. You'll strap a waxed board to your feet (okay, your stomach) and hurl yourself down massive dunes at sandboarding speed, then snorkel the rust-coloured Tangalooma shipwrecks just off the beach, where the coral has moved in and the fish don't care about you. Back on the mainland, Australia Zoo, the one Steve Irwin built, is about an hour north near Beerwah, and it's worth every minute of the drive. Two icons, both doable from one hostel bed.

Where the backpackers actually are

Brisbane's social map is simple. Days: South Bank lagoon, the West End's cheap eats and op-shops, and Sunday markets along the river. Nights: Fortitude Valley, the designated nightlife precinct where live music venues, clubs and backpacker bars stack up along Ann and Brunswick Streets, this is where every hostel bar crawl ends up. The hostel scene clusters around the city fringe, and because Brisbane is a working-holiday hub, the crowd skews long-stayers: people with jobs, savings goals and weekend plans, not just three-night blow-throughs. Translation: it's one of the easiest cities in Australia to build an actual crew before you head north.

Good questions, straight answers

When is the best time to visit Brisbane?

Brisbane works year-round, but April to October is the sweet spot, dry, sunny days around 21–26°C and mild nights. Summer (December to February) is hot, humid and stormy, though everything stays open and the lagoon earns its keep. Winter here is what most of Europe calls a good summer, so don't overthink it.

How many days should I spend in Brisbane?

Two to three days covers the city itself, South Bank, the Story Bridge, Kangaroo Point and a Fortitude Valley night out. Add a full day for Moreton Island and another for Australia Zoo and you've got a solid four to five. Working-holiday travellers often stay months: jobs are easier to land here than in Sydney.

Is Brisbane expensive for backpackers?

It's noticeably cheaper than Sydney, hostel beds, pints and rent all run lower. Stretch it further with the free stuff: Streets Beach lagoon, the Kangaroo Point boardwalk, free public barbecues, GOMA gallery (free entry) and the CityHopper ferry, which is a free ride down the Brisbane River. Cook at the hostel and your dollars last.

What's the top thing to do in Brisbane for first-timers?

Start at South Bank Parklands, swim the free lagoon, walk the riverside, get your bearings with the skyline across the water. Then pick your Story Bridge moment: climb it at sunset if you've got the budget, or watch it light up from the Kangaroo Point cliffs for free. Easy, iconic, zero planning required.

How do I get to Brisbane?

Brisbane Airport takes direct flights from every Australian capital and much of Asia; the Airtrain runs to the city in about 20 minutes. Overland, it's roughly two hours by train from the Gold Coast, two to three hours by bus from Byron Bay, and the classic Greyhound route up from Sydney takes around 15–17 hours.

Is Brisbane good for solo travellers?

One of the best cities in Australia for it. The hostel crowd skews working-holiday, so people stick around long enough to actually become mates rather than vanishing north after two nights. It's compact, walkable, safe by big-city standards, and the free lagoon-and-picnic culture makes striking up conversations stupidly easy.

What wildlife can I see around Brisbane?

Lone Pine Koala Sanctuary, a short bus ride from the city, is the world's oldest koala sanctuary, koalas, kangaroos and wombats without leaving town. On Moreton Island you can snorkel with fish and rays around the Tangalooma wrecks, and from roughly June to November humpback whales cruise past Moreton Bay on their migration.

What are the best day trips from Brisbane?

Moreton Island is the headliner, sandboarding giant dunes and snorkelling shipwrecks, about 75 minutes by ferry. Australia Zoo sits an hour north near Beerwah. The Gold Coast's surf beaches are an hour south by train, North Stradbroke Island serves up gorges and wild dolphins, and the Sunshine Coast opens the road to Noosa.
