Brisbane for Backpackers: Moreton Island, Straddie and the City in Between

Brisbane for backpackers: the Moreton Island and North Stradbroke Island day trips worth the ferry, the free city beach, where the hostels are and how many days to give it.

The Wanderlust crew · Updated · 8 min read

Short answer: Brisbane is the East Coast city most travellers plan one night in and should give three. The city itself is easy: a free sand beach at South Bank, the Kangaroo Point cliffs for the skyline, Fortitude Valley for the nights. The reason to stay is offshore. Moreton Island, the world’s third-largest sand island, is about 75 minutes away by ferry and has snorkelable shipwrecks and sand dunes you toboggan down; North Stradbroke Island (Minjerribah) is 25 minutes from Cleveland by water taxi, with a gorge walk where turtles and dolphins pass below. Moreton day trips from Brisbane start from $139; the Straddie 4WD day is $149.

Getting your bearings

Brisbane sits on a river that loops through the middle of it. The CBD is on the north bank, South Bank Parklands directly opposite, and the hostels cluster on the city fringe around the CBD, Fortitude Valley and South Brisbane. The CityCat ferries run up and down the river and are the best cheap sightseeing in town. It is a working-holiday hub, so the hostel crowd skews to people with jobs and weekend plans, which makes it one of the easiest cities to build a crew before heading north.

Most travellers arrive by overnight bus from Byron Bay or Sydney, or fly in. Brisbane Airport is on the Airtrain line to the city. The Gold Coast is an hour south by train, Noosa about two hours north.

The free stuff first

  • Streets Beach, South Bank. A lagoon with real sand, palms and lifeguards, opposite the CBD skyline. Free. Half the backpackers in Brisbane are here on a sunny afternoon.
  • Kangaroo Point cliffs. Walk the riverside boardwalk from the CBD, watch the climbers on the cliff face, and sit at the top as the Story Bridge lights come on. The ticketed Story Bridge climb is the paid version of the same view.
  • Mt Coot-tha lookout. Bus up for the whole city to the bay. No ticket.
  • The CityCat. A cheap go-card fare for a long river ride past the cliffs, the university and New Farm.
  • West End. Cheap eats, op-shops and the weekend markets along the river.

Nights: Fortitude Valley is the designated nightlife precinct, with live music venues and backpacker bars stacked along Ann and Brunswick Streets. Every hostel bar crawl ends here.

Moreton Island: the day trip that ruins other day trips

Moreton Island (Mulgumpin) is the third-largest sand island in the world and sits across Moreton Bay from the city, about 75 minutes by ferry. Two things make it the best day out from any East Coast capital: the Tangalooma Wrecks, fifteen vessels deliberately sunk between 1964 and 1984 to form a boat anchorage, now a coral-covered snorkel site in turquoise water a few metres off the beach; and The Desert, a bowl of bare dunes behind the resort that you toboggan down on a waxed board.

Three ways to do it, in order of price:

TripWhat you getFrom
Adventure Moreton Island Day PassReturn ferry, 3 hours of kayak hire, 3 hours of snorkel gear, an hour on a SUP, resort facilities; self-guided$139
Moreton Island ‘Get Wrecked’ TourGuided wrecks snorkel, transparent kayaks, sand tobogganing, a 4WD run to The Desert, gear, wetsuits and lunch$189
Moreton Island 4WD Eco Sightseeing TourMax 10, guided 4WD across the island: Blue Lagoon swim, Champagne Pools and Honeymoon Bay walk, Cape Moreton Lighthouse, picnic lunch$189

The day pass is the budget pick if you are a confident swimmer who wants the wrecks and the water at your own pace. Get Wrecked is the one most backpackers book: it is the full action day with the guided snorkel and the dunes, and the group is the point. The 4WD eco day skips the wrecks and the dunes for the wild east side of the island, the lighthouse and the lagoon; pick it if you have done your snorkelling further north or want the island without the crowd.

Two days is better than one. The Moreton Island 2-Day 4WD Tour (Glamping), $489, does the wrecks snorkel, the sandboarding and the Blue Lagoon by 4WD, with a night in a glamping tent 50 metres from Bulwer Beach, meals and gear included, and a campfire. It is the closest thing to a K’gari trip south of K’gari, at well under half the price of a 3-day K’gari tag-along.

North Stradbroke Island: the quiet one

Straddie (Minjerribah) is the other big sand island in the bay, reached from Cleveland in Brisbane’s east: about 25 minutes on the passenger water taxi or about 50 on the vehicle ferry. It is the locals’ island, lower-key than Moreton, with surf beaches on the ocean side, Lake Bummiera (Brown Lake) stained amber by tea-trees, and the North Gorge Walk at Point Lookout, an easy headland loop where turtles, dolphins and rays cruise below and humpbacks pass from roughly late May to early November.

The North Stradbroke Island Day 4WD Tour, $149, does the ferry, the lake swim, Cylinder and Flinders beaches by 4WD and the Point Lookout walk with a guide, so you do not need a car or a bus timetable. Watch for kangaroos on the beach.

Moreton or Straddie? Moreton for the wrecks, the dunes and the group day. Straddie for the gorge walk, the surf beach and a calmer day. Both if you have the time; they are different islands.

Surf, zoo and the Gold Coast

Brisbane itself has no surf beach, but the Gold Coast is an hour south by train. The Beginner Group Surf Lesson, $79, is a two-hour lesson on the coast’s learner beach with board, rashie and a warm shower after. If you are heading north, Byron Bay’s point breaks are the better place to learn and the Byron Bay guide covers the options.

Australia Zoo is about an hour north near Beerwah, on the way to Noosa. The Australia Zoo Day Tour with Noosa Transfers, $159, runs from the Noosa end, so it fits better once you have moved up the coast; the Noosa guide has that stretch.

How many days, and where it fits

Three days works: one for the city (South Bank, the cliffs, the Valley), one for Moreton, one for Straddie or a recovery day. Two days if you only do Moreton. Brisbane is also the start of the 14-Day Brisbane to Cairns semi-guided trip, from $2,599, which pre-books the beds, the bus legs and the guided days (K’gari, the Whitsundays boat, the reef) from the start date you choose; you travel the route solo on the set schedule and meet people on the guided adventures. The city itself is the one place on the East Coast where you do not need a tour to have a good time, so spend the money on the islands.

Brisbane is also where the East Coast guided group tours split: the Oz Adventure, 10 Days Sydney to Brisbane finishes here and the 20-day Brisbane to Cairns starts here. East Coast multi-day tours by price lists both.

When to go

Brisbane is subtropical: warm and humid in summer (December to February) with afternoon storms, mild and dry in winter (June to August), when it is one of the best cities in the country to be in. The Queensland school holidays (12 December 2026 to 26 January 2027 this summer) fill the ferries and the island trips, so book Moreton a few days ahead in that window. Whale season on Straddie’s gorge walk runs roughly late May to early November. Stinger suits are a tropical Queensland thing, from the Whitsundays north; the guided Moreton snorkel supplies wetsuits instead.
