Locals call it Straddie, and it's Brisbane's best-kept open secret: a sand island of tea-coloured lakes, surf beaches and headlands where you can watch whales migrate past with your feet on solid ground. This 8-hour 4WD day covers it properly.
The ferry ride across Moreton Bay Marine Park starts the wildlife count, dolphins, turtles and seasonal whales are all regulars, then the island takes over: a swim at freshwater Lake Bummiera (Brown Lake), stained amber by tea-trees and warmer than it has any right to be, stops at Amity Point, Cylinder Beach and Flinders Beach, and views across to Moreton Island's Big Sand Hills. The finale is the Whale Walk at Point Lookout, an expert-guided headland stroll with sweeping coastal views, and in season, humpbacks putting on the show offshore. Beach kangaroos make occasional cameos, because Straddie is like that.
Guide, 4WD and ferry are included; the $80 adult fee for parks and ferry is paid on departure day.
