Short answer: two weeks from Brisbane to Cairns costs roughly $2,450 to $2,950 per person if you book it yourself. That’s a bus pass, about 10 hostel nights, food, a 3-day K’gari trip, a Whitsundays sail and a reef day, at 27 October 2026 prices. The East Coast Australia: 14-Day Semi-Guided Adventure books the same route in one go from $2,599 ($2,829 if you start in December, January or July), with 12 nights of beds and a 2-night sail instead of 1. Food and drinks on free days are extra on both.

Two weeks: Brisbane to Cairns, not Sydney to Cairns
Sydney to Cairns is about 2,900 km by road. In 14 days you’d spend more time on the bus than at the beach. Two weeks fits Queensland’s big four: Noosa, K’gari, the Whitsundays and the Great Barrier Reef. The day-by-day plan is in our 2-week East Coast itinerary. If you need to start in Sydney, look at 17 days: the Sydney to Cairns 17-Day Semi-Guided Adventure is from $2,999.
DIY budget, line by line
The tour and pass prices are ours, live. The beds and food figures are rough estimates, not our prices.
| Line | What to expect |
|---|---|
| Greyhound East Coast Pass, 15 days | $339 |
| Hostel beds, about 10 nights (K’gari camping and the boat cover the rest) | roughly $350 to $600 (dorms run about $35 to $60 a night) |
| Food, 14 days | roughly $420 to $700 if you cook some of it; K’gari and the boat include most meals |
| K’gari 4WD tag-along, 3 days | $599 |
| Whitsundays sail, 2 days 1 night | $449 |
| Outer Great Barrier Reef day from Cairns | $269 |
| Optional: Noosa Everglades kayak | $189 |
| Drinks, insurance, buffer | yours to set; don’t skip insurance |
Check the 15-day pass before the 14-day. On 27 October the 15-day East Coast Pass cost $339 and the 14-day $389. Pass prices don’t always go up with length, so check the next length up before you pay.
The three big tours make up more than half the DIY total. They’re also the ones that sell out in school holidays: a bus pass doesn’t hold you a seat on a boat. Book K’gari and the sail first.

DIY or semi-guided?
On price they come out close. The DIY range above sits around the semi-guided Standard price. The semi-guided trip has two more beds booked, a second night on the boat and a surf lesson. DIY has the cooking-your-own-food savings and full freedom to change plans. The real difference is admin and risk: DIY means booking and timing every leg yourself, and losing a K’gari or boat seat in a busy week. A longer side-by-side is in bus pass vs group tour vs semi-guided.
What changes the cost
- Travel month. December and January cost more everywhere: beds, boats and the semi-guided trip.
- Dorm or private room. Private rooms cost noticeably more than a dorm.
- Sailing length. A 2-night sail costs more than a 2-day, 1-night one. See Whitsundays sailing prices.
- Add-ons. A skydive, a dive on the reef or a scenic flight is extra on every option.
- Drinks. The line where most budgets leak.
