How Much Does 4 Weeks on Australia's East Coast Cost?

What a month backpacking Sydney to Cairns costs three ways: DIY with a bus pass, a semi-guided bundle or a guided group tour, with a line-by-line budget.

The Wanderlust crew · Updated · 6 min read

Short answer: four weeks from Sydney to Cairns costs from $4,329 as a semi-guided bundle (bus pass, 25 nights, 18 meals and the big adventures in one booking; $4,589 if you start in December or January) or from $5,199 as a fully guided group tour. Doing it yourself starts with a bus pass from $319, then roughly $950 to $1,600 for hostel beds, plus food and the big tours at their listed prices.

Option 1: DIY with a bus pass

The East Coast Pass (Create Your Own) gives 30 days of hop-on, hop-off coach travel and is from $319. It is transport only. Everything else you book yourself.

Here is the rough shape of a DIY month. The accommodation, food and spending figures are rough estimates, not our prices.

LineWhat to expect
Bus passfrom $319
Hostel beds, about 27 nightsroughly $950 to $1,600 (dorms run roughly $35 to $60 a night)
Foodroughly $30 to $50 a day if you cook some of it
K’gari 4WD tag-along (3 days)from $599
Whitsundays sail (2 days, 1 night)from $449
Outer Great Barrier Reef dayfrom $269
Byron surf lessonfrom $89
Noosa Everglades kayakfrom $189
Drinks, extras, insurance, bufferyours to set; do not skip insurance

Add the pass, the beds, food for 28 days and the five tours, and you have your DIY total. The tours are the biggest single block, and they sell out in busy months. A bus pass does not hold you a seat on a boat.

The cost trap in DIY is drinks and impulse tours, not the beds. Hostel bars add up fast, so cook dinner. Our 21-day costed itinerary shows where people overspend and underspend.

Option 2: semi-guided bundle

The East Coast Australia: 28-Day Semi-Guided Adventure is from $4,329. One booking covers:

  • the hop-on hop-off bus pass, Sydney to Cairns
  • 25 nights of accommodation along the route, plus the overnight coaches to Spot X and from Rainbow Beach to Airlie
  • a 3-day K’gari 4WD tag-along safari with beach camping
  • a 2-night Whitsundays sail
  • a full day on the outer Great Barrier Reef
  • a 3-day beachfront surf camp at Arrawarra (two nights, two lessons), with every meal included
  • the Noosa Everglades canoe, Magnetic Island and an Atherton Tablelands waterfall day

It is a fixed itinerary. You choose the start date (open-dated, valid 12 months, starting from Sydney or Cairns) and the schedule is set. Guides run the big days and the days between are unguided.

Included meals: 18 in total, every meal at the surf camp (5), on the K’gari safari (7) and aboard the Whitsundays boat (5), plus a buffet lunch on the reef day. Not included: flights, compulsory travel insurance, meals on the free days and optional add-ons. The listing suggests budgeting roughly $50 to $70 a day for spending money.

The price depends on the month you start:

If you want every stop on the coast, the East Coast Classic: 33 Days is from $4,909 and adds the Gold Coast, Brisbane and Mission Beach nights.

Option 3: guided group tour

The Oz East Coast Adventure, 28 Days Sydney to Cairns is from $5,199. It is for ages 18 to early 40s, with 22 to 28 per departure, 27 nights of hostels, 24 meals, all East Coast transport and a group leader throughout. It includes a surf lesson, the 3-day K’gari 4WD, a 2-night Whitsundays sail, Magnetic Island and an outer reef day. Insurance, some meals and optional activities are extra.

There is also the East Coast 28 Day Group Tour from Sydney, from $4,749. Its listing excludes public transport and does not itemise inclusions, so check the tour page before comparing it with the one above.

On price right now, the semi-guided 28-day ($4,329) is cheaper than the guided 28-day ($5,199). The guided tour adds a group leader, 24 meals and a set departure date.

How a month splits across the coast

The semi-guided 28-day splits its 27 nights, two of them on overnight coaches, like this:

Four weeks removes the rush of the three-week run. If you only have two weeks, see our 2-week Brisbane to Cairns itinerary.

What changes the cost

  • Travel month. School holidays and Christmas fill beds and boats. The semi-guided 28-day steps up in April, September and November ($4,589) and December and January ($4,589). More in East Coast Australia in December and January. See the best time to visit the East Coast.
  • Dorm or private room. Private rooms cost noticeably more than a dorm.
  • Bus or flights. The pass is the budget route. Flying the long legs saves travel days but adds cost.
  • Add-ons. A skydive, extra dives, a scenic flight or the Daintree day are extra on every option.
  • Drinks. The line where most budgets leak.

FAQs

How much money do I need for 4 weeks on the East Coast of Australia?

It depends on the model. A semi-guided bundle is from $4,329 ($4,589 in peak months) with beds, 18 meals and the big adventures booked, plus roughly $50 to $70 a day spending money per the listing. A guided tour is from $5,199. DIY is the bus pass from $319, roughly $950 to $1,600 for beds, then food and the big tours at their listed prices.

Is 4 weeks enough for Sydney to Cairns?

Yes. Three weeks is the minimum and four lets you do Sydney, Byron, Noosa, K’gari, the Whitsundays, Magnetic Island and Cairns without rushing.

Is a semi-guided trip cheaper than booking it all myself?

Often close. Once you pay for the same beds and the same big tours separately, the gap narrows a long way, and the bundle saves you the admin and the sell-out risk.

Are flights included?

No. Flights to your start city and home from your finish city are extra on every option here.

Can I change the itinerary on a semi-guided trip?

No. You choose the start date, but the route, the nights and the activities are fixed and pre-booked. If you want to change plans on the road, go DIY with a bus pass.

Do I need travel insurance?

Yes. It is compulsory on the semi-guided trip and excluded from every price on this page.
