Best Way to Do the East Coast: Bus Pass vs Group Tour vs Semi-Guided

Greyhound pass from $319, guided group tours from $1,299, semi-guided bundles from $1,499: what each way of doing the East Coast costs and who it suits.

The Wanderlust crew · Updated · 11 min read

Short answer

Travelling solo, the lowest-cost way to do the East Coast is a Greyhound East Coast Pass (Create Your Own), 7 to 45 Days from $319 and booking everything else yourself (as a pair, a campervan split two ways can work out cheaper, because it’s your bed too). The easiest is a fully guided group tour, from $1,199 for 10 days to $7,189 for seven weeks, with a leader and one crew the whole way. The middle path is a semi-guided bundle from $2,599 for 14 days: bus pass, beds and the big adventures pre-booked in a set itinerary, guides on the big days only, and a start date you choose. For most 18–35s doing Sydney to Cairns in three to five weeks, semi-guided is the sweet spot: the big days booked, the rest your own; DIY wins if you have more time than money; a group tour wins if you want zero admin.

Prices are per person in AUD and update from our live listings. Semi-guided bundles are priced by travel month; the “from” price is the standard-season price. Every multi-day East Coast trip in one list, sorted by today’s price: East Coast Australia tours by price.

DIY: a Greyhound pass and your own bookings

The Greyhound East Coast Pass (Create Your Own), 7 to 45 Days from $319 gives unlimited hop-on, hop-off coach travel for the length you pick, 7 to 45 days, along the East Coast, any route, any direction, multiple daily departures, with free Wi-Fi, USB power and a toilet on board. You reserve each leg from your online account. The Greyhound National Pass (Create Your Own), 15 to 45 Days from $389 covers the whole network, with top-up days if you want to keep going.

Then you book everything else: every hostel, every ferry, every activity, every meal. The pass is transport, nothing more.

Beyond the pass (rough estimates, not our prices): hostel dorms along the coast run roughly $35–60 a night, so 20 nights is around $700–1,200. Food is roughly $30–50 a day if you cook some of it. The three big-ticket activities (a K’gari 4WD trip, a Whitsundays sail, a reef day) are priced on their own listings and are the largest line on a DIY budget. We’ve costed a full three-week DIY run in our 21-day East Coast itinerary with real costs.

Who it suits People with time, patience for admin and a tolerance for booking things on hostel Wi-Fi the night before. Also anyone who wants to change route halfway, because this is the only model where you can.

The trap: DIY often lands close to semi-guided once you’ve paid for the same beds and the same three activities, and in peak season the big trips sell out; a bus pass doesn’t hold a seat on a boat. Weighing the pass against a campervan instead? Our campervan vs bus pass comparison runs those numbers.

Fully guided group tours

One booking, one group, one leader, first hostel to last.

  • Oz Adventure, 10 Days Sydney to Brisbane from $1,199: 18 to 45s, 9 nights of hostels, 5 meals, all transport between cities, a group leader from day one, a Byron surf lesson, yoga, city tours and Gold Coast jet boating.
  • Oz East Coast Adventure, 20 Days Brisbane to Cairns from $4,099: 18 to 45s, 19 nights (hostels, sailing boat, K’gari camping), 20 meals, all transport including Magnetic Island ferries, a 3-day K’gari 4WD tag-along, a 2-day Whitsundays sail and a reef day.
  • Oz East Coast Adventure, 28 Days Sydney to Cairns from $5,199: 18 to early 40s, 22–28 per departure, 27 nights of hostels, 24 meals, all East Coast transport, a group leader throughout, surf lesson, 3-day K’gari 4WD, 2-night Whitsundays sail, Magnetic Island and an outer reef day. Insurance, some meals and optional activities are extra.
  • East Coast 28 Day Group Tour from Sydney from $4,749: 28 days with the same crew in a laid-back, all-in-one format. The listing excludes public transport and doesn’t itemise inclusions, so ask before comparing it with the one above.
  • East Coast Explorer Sydney to Cairns (5 Weeks) from $5,209: 36 days, 33 nights plus two overnight bus legs, a group leader throughout, all tour transport, max 20. Reef levy, port fuel and K’gari insurance are paid on tour; meals not in the itinerary are yours.
  • East Coast Explorer + Sydney Week (6 Weeks) from $6,109: 43 days, the same trip with a Sydney week (harbour cruise, Bondi, Blue Mountains) in front, max 12.
  • East Coast Explorer 7 Week Tour from Melbourne from $7,189: 50 days, 18 to 35s, 46 nights plus three overnight buses, an extra week in Melbourne and the Great Ocean Road.

Who it suits First-time solo travellers who want a crew locked in from day one, anyone who hates logistics, and people on fixed holiday dates who can match a departure.

The cost: on price, the 28-day semi-guided bundle ($4,329) is cheaper than the 28-day guided tour ($5,199). The guided tour adds a group leader, 24 meals and a set departure date.

Semi-guided bundles

Built for the gap between the two. One booking gets you the hop-on hop-off bus pass, every night’s bed and the big adventures, all pre-booked in a fixed itinerary. Guides run the big days: the K’gari 4WD safari, the Whitsundays sail, the reef trip, the surf lesson or surf camp, the Everglades canoe. On the other days you explore each stop your own way, on the set schedule, then catch the booked bus to the next one. You pick the start date; the itinerary is set. You book solo and meet people on every guided day.

All six include selected meals on the K’gari and Whitsundays days, a day-by-day itinerary pack and one person (me) who makes every reservation. Flights, compulsory travel insurance, most meals off the guided days, optional add-ons and gear deposits are extra; the listings suggest roughly $50–70 a day for spending money.

Prices step up by travel month: the 28-day is $4,329 in standard months, $4,589 in April, September and November and $4,589 in December and January. You see the price for your dates before you pay.

Next Travel Mates start dates

Who it suits Anyone who wants the big days guided and the other days their own way on a set schedule, without a leader doing a head count at breakfast. Solo travellers who want company without being tied to 25 people for a month. Anyone whose flights are booked but whose dates aren’t.

The catch: it’s a fixed itinerary. The nights in Byron are the nights in Byron, however good the hostel bar is, and Magnetic Island is on the schedule whether you’re tired or not. If you want that freedom, go DIY.

What you book yourself in each model

DIY: everything. Each coach leg, every hostel, K’gari, the Whitsundays boat, the reef day, the surf lesson, the Magnetic Island ferry, every meal, insurance, flights.

Guided group tour: flights, insurance, the meals not listed, optional activities like a skydive, and on the Explorer tours the reef levy, port fuel and K’gari insurance paid on tour.

Semi-guided: flights, insurance, most meals off the guided days, optional add-ons (the 33-day lists an optional 15,000ft skydive), Magnetic Island car hire, and gear deposits such as sleeping-bag hire on K’gari. Nothing on the route itself needs booking.

Which one, then

  • Tightest budget, six weeks spareDIY with the pass. Book the big three early.
  • Three to five weeks, first time in Australia, soloSemi-guided. The 21-day Classic from $3,099 covers the full list without the rush; the 33-day Classic from $4,909 misses nothing.
  • Fixed dates, want a leader and a locked-in crewThe Oz East Coast Adventure, 28 Days Sydney to Cairns from $5,199 or an Explorer with more time.
  • Only two weeksThe 14-Day Semi-Guided from $2,599 covers Queensland’s big four without the southern haul. No guided tour runs at that length.

Travelling alone? Is a group tour worth it?

If meeting people is the main thing you’re worried about, all three models work. They just make it more or less automatic.

  • Guided group tour: the most automatic. You meet your crew on day one and they’re with you to the end. Worth it if you want company from day one and don’t mind fixed dates.
  • Semi-guided: every booking puts you somewhere social (social hostels, the K’gari tag-along, the Whitsundays sail), with guides on the big days and solo time in between. Worth it if you want a social trip without the same group every day.
  • DIY pass: works fine for meeting people, but only if you book the group trips and pick social hostels. Skip those and it’s easy to end up on your own.

FAQs

Is a Greyhound pass really cheaper than a tour? For transport, yes: from $319. Once you add the same hostels and the same three big activities, the gap closes a long way. DIY is cheapest if you skip activities; if you want K’gari, the Whitsundays and the reef, the saving is smaller than the price tags suggest.

Can I change the itinerary on a semi-guided trip? No. The start date is yours to choose, but the sequence, the nights and the activities are fixed and pre-booked. If you want to change plans on the road, go DIY.

Do semi-guided trips have a guide? On the big days: the K’gari 4WD safari, the Whitsundays sail, the reef trip, surf lessons or the surf camp, and the Everglades canoe. On the other days you explore the stop your own way and catch your booked bus on schedule.

Are group tours worth it? If you want a leader handling everything and a crew locked in from day one, yes. The 28-day guided tour from $5,199 includes 24 meals and all transport; the semi-guided 28-day from $4,329 includes the pass, beds and 18 meals. On price, the semi-guided 28-day ($4,329) is cheaper than the guided 28-day ($5,199).

Which model is best for solo travellers? All three work. Group tours give you the same people for the whole trip; semi-guided gives you a new crew on each guided day plus hostels in between; DIY gives you whoever is on the bus.

How long do I need for Sydney to Cairns? Three weeks minimum; four to five to do it properly. The 21-day and 33-day Classics bracket that range, and the Explorer tours stretch to six or seven weeks.
