You can do the Aussie East Coast for $2,500 if you’re disciplined, or burn through $5,000 if you say yes to everything. Most backpackers land somewhere in the middle. Here’s a real 21-day itinerary with actual numbers — not the “from $1,499” marketing fluff.
The route (Sydney → Cairns)
Sydney → Byron Bay → Brisbane → Hervey Bay (Fraser Island) → Airlie Beach (Whitsundays) → Cairns (Great Barrier Reef). That’s the classic. Most people skip Brisbane or only spend a night.
You can do it in 14 days if you’re rushing. 21 days is the sweet spot — enough time to do all four big “things” (Sydney harbour, Fraser 4WD, Whitsundays sailing, GBR dive day) without feeling like you’re on a forced march.
Day-by-day breakdown
Days 1–4 — Sydney
Stay: Wake Up! Bondi or YHA Sydney Central. Bunk in a 4–6 bed dorm ~$45–60/night. Do: Bondi to Coogee walk (free), Opera House guided tour ($45), Manly ferry day trip ($16 return), Newtown for cheap eats. Skip if budget: Sydney Tower, harbour cruise tourist traps. Eat: Spice Alley in Chippendale, Coogee Pavilion, $5 sausage rolls from Bourke St Bakery. Budget: ~$300–400 for 4 days incl. transport.
Days 5–7 — Byron Bay
Get there: Greyhound bus ~$75, 12 hrs overnight. Or fly to Ballina + bus (1 hr), ~$130. Stay: Wake Up! Byron Bay or Aquarius. ~$40–55/night dorm. Do: Byron Bay Weekender covers the highlights — lighthouse hike at sunrise (free, do it), Wategos beach, Tallow Beach if you want it quieter, surf lesson ($65). Budget: ~$250–350 incl. tour.
Day 8 — Travel day to Hervey Bay
Bus $95, 9 hrs. Or fly into Hervey Bay airport from Brisbane ($120). Crash at the hostel for an early Fraser start.
Days 9–11 — Fraser Island (K’gari)
The trip: Fraser Island 3-Day 4WD Tagalong — $429 all-in (camping, food, fuel, ferry, 4WD). Why this format: You drive (with new mates in your 4WD), guide leads convoy, camping on the beach. Beats coach tours by a country mile. Budget: $429 + tips + a few extra beers = $480.
Day 12 — Travel day to Airlie Beach
Long bus day. ~$140, 14 hrs overnight on Greyhound. Or fly Hervey Bay → Mackay → shuttle, ~$300 (saves a day).
Days 13–15 — Whitsundays
The trip: Whitsundays 3-Day Sail — $675. Worth every cent. You’ll snorkel the inner reef, hike Hill Inlet, swim at Whitehaven (the actual whitest sand on the planet), sleep on the boat under stars. Budget: $675 + drinks at Airlie pre/post ($50–80) = ~$750.
Day 16 — Travel day to Cairns
Bus ~$130, 11 hrs. Or fly Proserpine → Cairns, ~$160 (much faster).
Days 17–21 — Cairns
Stay: Gilligan’s or Cairns Central YHA. $35–50/night.
Do: Great Barrier Reef Outer Dive Day — $245 for a certified dive day (or first-time intro dive). Rainforest day to Cape Tribulation ($180). Atherton Tablelands waterfalls self-drive day ($60 with mates splitting a car). Lagoon free, Esplanade markets free.
Budget: ~$650 for 5 days incl. reef + rainforest.
What the whole thing actually costs
| Category | Budget version | Comfortable version |
|---|---|---|
| Accommodation (21 nights, dorms) | $900 | $1,200 |
| Transport (Greyhound passes / flights) | $400 | $700 |
| Big tours (Fraser + Whitsundays + GBR) | $1,350 | $1,500 |
| Food (groceries + cheap eats) | $400 | $700 |
| Drinks / nights out | $200 | $500 |
| Activities (surf lesson, rainforest, etc.) | $200 | $400 |
| Buffer (visa, insurance, “yes” moments) | $250 | $500 |
| Total | $3,700 | $5,500 |
That’s per person, AUD. Flights to Australia not included.
Where most people overspend: drinks. Hostel bars are $9–12/beer. Pre-drink at the kitchen. $4 wine from Dan Murphy’s hits the same after the second one.
Where most people underspend: insurance + a small “emergency” buffer. Don’t skip these. World Nomads or SafetyWing — basic cover ~$80 for 3 weeks.
Ways to do it cheaper
- Bus pass instead of flights. Greyhound 60-day East Coast pass ~$429 — works out cheaper than booking legs individually.
- Combo trip bookings. The Ultimate East Coast 21-Day package bundles all the big tours + transport for $2,495 — saves ~$300 vs booking separately, and we sort the logistics.
- Cook your own breakfast and lunch. Every hostel has a kitchen. $40/week of groceries beats $15/day at cafés.
- Avoid 7-night party hostels at $60/night. A quiet 12-bed dorm at $35/night gets you a better sleep AND $25 to spend on actual fun.
Ways to do it more comfortably
- Private rooms at hostels run $80–120/night vs $40 for a dorm — fine luxury if you’re 25+ and over the bunk-bed life.
- Fly the long legs. Sydney → Brisbane and Brisbane → Cairns flights are often $99 on Jetstar specials. Saves a full travel day each way.
- Add a Whitsundays helicopter flight ($350) — overrated for some, the highlight of the trip for others. Worth it on a clear day.
When to go
Best months: April–May or September–October. Avoid Dec–Feb in tropical north (cyclone risk, stinger season) and avoid July–Aug if you hate crowds.
