Catch your first wave in Byron. Take the wheel of a 4WD on K'gari's beach highway. Sleep on deck in the Whitsundays and go barefoot on Whitehaven's squeaky silica. Twenty-one days between Sydney and Cairns: the classic East Coast run, with a guide and other backpackers on the big days and the days between to explore your own way. One booking sorts your bus pass, every bed and the full adventure list: a Byron surf lesson, a canoe through the glassy Noosa Everglades, three days 4WDing K'gari's sand highways, a two-night Whitsundays sail, koala-spotting on Magnetic Island and a Great Barrier Reef day to close, with an optional Mission Beach skydive to add on if you're game. It's open-dated and valid 12 months, you book solo and collect your mates on the way (every guided day runs with a group, every hostel bar does the rest), and our concierge handles every reservation. Start from Sydney or Cairns, the coast doesn't care which way you run it.

Stop 1
Start wherever suits, Sydney or Cairns, but the classic run opens in Sydney. Two days to land properly: ferry to Manly, walk the Bondi-to-Coogee cliff track, watch the Opera House glow at dusk and grab your bus pass and itinerary pack. Your first hostel is booked and waiting, the dorm is full of people doing exactly what you're doing, and the East Coast is queued up in front of you. On the evening of day 2 the overnight bus heads north, and you wake up in Byron.
Stop 2
Off the overnight bus by breakfast, and Byron is where the trip finds its rhythm. Learn to surf with a local school on the town's forgiving beach breaks, walk to the Cape Byron lighthouse at mainland Australia's most easterly point for sunrise, and give your afternoons to the markets, beach bars and drum-circle sunsets. Whales cruise past on migration June–November, and a dolphin sea-kayak out through the Cape Byron Marine Park is there as an optional add-on if you want it. Two nights, enough to find the town's pace before the coast pulls you north.
Stop 3
A quick hop up to the Gold Coast for a night of contrast: Surfers Paradise stacks high-rises right onto a wide surf beach, with a strip that doesn't blink till sunrise. Swim between the flags, ride the tower lifts for the view, and if theme parks are your thing, Movie World, Dreamworld and Wet'n'Wild are all a short trip inland. One night, then back on the coast road to Noosa.
Stop 4
Noosa is the coast at its most effortlessly beautiful. Canoe the Everglades, one of only two everglade systems on the planet, through water so still the paperbarks mirror back at you. Walk the Noosa National Park coastal track past koalas and hidden coves to the point breaks at Tea Tree Bay, then swim off the calm main beach and browse Hastings Street. A polished, mellow interlude before things get sandy. Day 6 is the coach up from the Gold Coast, day 7 the Everglades, and on the afternoon of day 8 the coach carries you on to Rainbow Beach for the night, a short walk from the briefing that starts K'gari the next morning.
Stop 5
The first showstopper: three days on K'gari, the world's largest sand island, starting at a 7am briefing in Rainbow Beach, driving a 4WD in convoy with a guide up front showing you the lines. Swim the impossibly blue Lake McKenzie, float down crystal-clear Eli Creek, clamber over the rusting SS Maheno shipwreck, soak in the Champagne Pools and hike the sandblow to Lake Wabby. Nights are beach camping, campfire, proper feed, star fields, the odd dingo patrol, with 75-Mile Beach as your highway. Meals and camping gear sorted (bring or hire a sleeping bag); you drive and swim. Back on the mainland mid-afternoon on day 11, you board the overnight bus to Airlie Beach.
Stop 6
The overnight bus rolls into Airlie Beach on the morning of day 12, so you get a full day at the lagoon before the sail everyone talks about afterwards. On day 13 you board an ex-racing maxi yacht for two nights among the 74 Whitsunday Islands: snorkel the fringing reef, hike to the Hill Inlet lookout where the tide swirls turquoise sand into living art, and go barefoot on Whitehaven Beach, 98% pure silica sand that squeaks underfoot. Back in Airlie on day 15 for a last night of marina bars and beach-club energy. The postcard bit of the coast, fully earned.
Stop 7
A short ferry from Townsville, 'Maggie' is the island where the pace drops and the wildlife turns up. Hire an open-top Barbie car and loop the island's 23 bays, snorkel the fringing reef at Geoffrey Bay, and walk the Forts Walk at golden hour, one of the best places in the country to spot wild koalas dozing in the gums. Granite boulders, quiet beaches, big sunsets. Two nights of island time before the adrenaline spikes.
Stop 8
A palm-fringed beach town where cassowary-dotted rainforest runs down to the Coral Sea, a mellow stop to break the run north. It's also the launch point for Australia's most scenic skydive: a 15,000ft tandem jump over reef and rainforest is the region's signature add-on if you're game, or skip it and give the day to the beaches and rainforest walks. Mission Beach earns its place either way.
Stop 9
Finish where the jungle meets the sea. You roll in from Mission Beach on day 19 and give the evening to the Esplanade lagoon and night markets, because the reef boat leaves early. Day 20 is a full day on the Great Barrier Reef, snorkelling or diving the outer reef among turtles, rays, giant clams and technicolour coral, one of the seven natural wonders of the world. Day 21 is yours until you fly: the lagoon, a last round of the night markets, or an early start on an optional Tablelands or Daintree day if your flight is late. Toast three weeks of coast with the mates you've made along the way, or start here and run the whole thing in reverse.
Stop 1
Start where the jungle meets the sea. Day 1 is yours to land and settle into Cairns, because the reef boats leave in the morning: the Esplanade lagoon and night markets are built for meeting the dorm. Day 2 is a full day on the outer Great Barrier Reef, over turtles, rays, giant clams and coral in colours you'll struggle to describe afterwards, one of the seven natural wonders, ticked, snorkel in hand. Collect your bus pass and itinerary pack, and on day 3 ride south to Mission Beach.
Stop 2
A palm-fringed beach town where cassowary-dotted rainforest runs down to the Coral Sea, a mellow stop to break the run south. It's also the launch point for Australia's most scenic skydive: a 15,000ft tandem jump over reef and rainforest is the region's signature add-on if you're game, or skip it and give the day to the beaches and rainforest walks. A night in Airlie Beach at the lagoon and the marina at sunset, then on day 7 you step aboard an ex-racing maxi yacht for two nights threading the 74 Whitsunday Islands. Snorkel the fringing reef, hike to the Hill Inlet lookout where the tide swirls turquoise sand into shapes that look edited, and go barefoot on Whitehaven Beach, 98% pure silica sand that genuinely squeaks. Back on the dock late morning on day 9 with salt in your hair, and that evening the overnight bus carries you south to Rainbow Beach. Worth it.
Stop 5
Off the overnight bus into Rainbow Beach on the morning of day 10, with the day free to wander the town and a bed here tonight. At the 7am briefing on day 11 you're onto the world's largest sand island, driving it yourself, tag-along style, sharing the wheel of a 4WD in convoy while a lead guide calls the lines over the radio. Swim Lake McKenzie's silica-white shallows, float down Eli Creek's glass-clear current, scramble over the rusted SS Maheno wreck, fizz about in the Champagne Pools and hike the sandblow to Lake Wabby. Nights are beach camping: campfire, a proper feed, and 75-Mile Beach as tomorrow's highway. Meals and camping gear sorted, bring or hire a sleeping bag, then just drive and swim. Back at Rainbow Beach mid-afternoon on day 13, you've a bed here again that night, then on day 14 it's a short hop south to Noosa.
Stop 6
This is the stop rushed itineraries can't fit. The coach from Rainbow Beach lands you in Noosa on day 14, and day 15 is the Everglades: canoe one of only two everglade systems on earth, where tannin-dark water sits so still the paperbarks and sky double themselves on the surface. Then walk the national park's coastal track past dozing koalas and hidden coves to the longboarders at Tea Tree Bay, graze Hastings Street and swim off the calm main beach. A polished, mellow breather after the sand island roughed you up nicely. On day 16 the coach carries you on to the Gold Coast.
