Short answer

To make friends on the East Coast, pick a trip where one group travels together from Sydney to Cairns. Four companies run one: Ultimate (fully guided, ages 18 to 35, 3 to 7 weeks), Welcome To Travel (30 days, semi-guided, ages 18 to 39, around 80% of travellers come solo), INTRO Travel (28 days fully guided, ages 18 to early 40s, groups of 22 to 28) and Backpacking Tours (28 days, ages 20 to 45). Wanderlust is a booking agency that sells the first three in one place, with no booking fee: Ultimate’s 5-week East Coast Explorer from $5,209, Welcome To Travel’s 30-day trip from $4,639 and INTRO’s 28 days from $5,199. If you’d rather travel solo and meet people on the big trips, our own Travel Mates trips book every bed and the K’gari, Whitsundays and reef days from $2,599.

Prices are per person in AUD. Ours update from live listings; operator prices were checked on their own websites on 27 October 2026.

What actually makes friends on a tour

Five things decide whether you finish the coast with mates, and they are easy to check on any listing:

  1. The same group every day. Friendships form on day 10, not day 1. All four group tours above keep one group from Sydney to Cairns.
  2. Group size of about 20 to 28. Big enough to find your people, small enough that everyone knows everyone by Byron.
  3. Nights together, not just days. Look for shared dorms with your own group, camping on K’gari and two nights on a Whitsundays boat. Every trip in the table includes the K’gari 4WD and an overnight sail or Whitehaven day.
  4. People like you. Check the age range, and how many travel solo. Welcome To Travel says around 80% of its East Coast travellers come solo; Ultimate says most people book solo.
  5. A leader early on. The first three days set the tone. A guide who runs the first nights out does the ice-breaking for you.
East Coast Explorer Sydney to Cairns (5 Weeks) ★ Our top pick

1. Ultimate: best for a consistent group of friends

36 days

Fully guided, ages 18 to 35, with the same group and a group leader all the way. Ultimate’s East Coast range runs from 3 to 7 weeks. We sell the 5-week Explorer from $5,209 (36 days, up to 20 people, 33 nights booked), the 6-week from $6,109 and the 7-week from $7,189.

Pick it if: you want to arrive alone and be part of a group from the first night, and you have five weeks or more.

Sydney Week + East Coast Semi-Guided Tour, Sydney to Cairns (37 Days)

2. Welcome To Travel: best for a social trip with free time

37 days

Thirty days from Sydney to Cairns with one group: Byron Bay, the Gold Coast, Noosa, two nights in the Noosa Everglades, three days on K’gari (two nights camping), a Heart Reef scenic flight, Whitehaven Beach, Magnetic Island and the Great Barrier Reef. A guide travels with you from Sydney to Byron; after that it’s local guides and an on-call support team, so you have more free time than on a fully guided trip. Ages 18 to 39, average age mid-twenties, around 80% solo, 6 to 8 bed dorms shared with your own group.

Ours from $4,639, against the operator’s A$4,895 (A$4,695 with its early-bird code). Longer versions: 37 days with a guided Sydney week from $5,489 and 44 days from Melbourne from $6,289.

Pick it if: you want the same crew but not a leader every day.

Oz East Coast Adventure, 28 Days Sydney to Cairns

3. INTRO Travel: best for a month, fully guided

28 days

The Oz East Coast Adventure, 28 Days Sydney to Cairns is from $5,199 with us, against an RRP of A$5,299. Ages 18 to early 40s, 22 to 28 per departure, a group leader throughout, 27 nights of hostels, 24 meals, a surf lesson, the 3-day K’gari 4WD, a 2-night Whitsundays sail, Magnetic Island and an outer reef day. Ten days is enough? INTRO’s Sydney to Brisbane trip is from $1,199.

Pick it if: you have four weeks and want a party-friendly group with everything handled.

4. Backpacking Tours: a wider age range

A 28-day Sydney to Cairns group tour for 20 to 45s, 20 to 28 people, with a leader, 22 meals, K’gari camping and two nights on a Whitsundays boat. It’s priced in euros: €3,405 on sale (normally €3,649), about A$5,100 by its own conversion, on 27 October 2026. We don’t sell it.

Pick it if: you’re in your late 30s or 40s and want people your age in the group.

East Coast Australia: 28-Day Semi-Guided Adventure

5. Travel Mates: travel solo, meet people on the big trips

28 days

Our own semi-guided trips. They are not group tours: there’s no group or leader travelling with you. We book every bed, the bus pass and the big guided trips (a surf camp, K’gari, two nights sailing the Whitsundays, the reef), which is where backpackers meet each other, and you choose the start date. The 28-Day is from $4,329, The Classic 21 Days from $3,099 and the 14-Day Brisbane to Cairns from $2,599.

Pick it if: you want company on the big days and your own time in between, or a start date that isn’t on a group tour’s calendar.

FAQs

Which East Coast tour is best for making friends?

One where the same group travels from Sydney to Cairns: Ultimate (18 to 35, 3 to 7 weeks), Welcome To Travel (18 to 39, 30 days), INTRO (18 to early 40s, 28 days) or Backpacking Tours (20 to 45, 28 days). Through Wanderlust, Welcome To Travel’s 30 days is from $4,639 and INTRO’s 28 days from $5,199.

Do most people on these tours travel solo?

Yes. Welcome To Travel says around 80% of its East Coast travellers come solo, and Ultimate says most of its travellers book solo.

Can I book Ultimate, Welcome To Travel and INTRO in one place?

Yes. Wanderlust sells all three, plus our own Travel Mates trips, with no booking fee. The operator runs the trip, so you get the same group, guide and itinerary as booking with them. Operators sometimes run sales on their own websites, so it’s worth a quick look before you book anywhere.

Is Travel Mates a group tour?

No. You travel the route solo on a fixed itinerary, and the big trips (K’gari, the Whitsundays sail, the reef) run with a guided group. If you want one group the whole way, pick one of the group tours above.

What age are the people on East Coast group tours?

Mostly early to mid twenties. Ultimate is 18 to 35, Welcome To Travel 18 to 39 (average mid-twenties), INTRO 18 to early 40s and Backpacking Tours 20 to 45.
