What actually makes friends on a tour
Five things decide whether you finish the coast with mates, and they are easy to check on any listing:
- The same group every day. Friendships form on day 10, not day 1. All four group tours above keep one group from Sydney to Cairns.
- Group size of about 20 to 28. Big enough to find your people, small enough that everyone knows everyone by Byron.
- Nights together, not just days. Look for shared dorms with your own group, camping on K’gari and two nights on a Whitsundays boat. Every trip in the table includes the K’gari 4WD and an overnight sail or Whitehaven day.
- People like you. Check the age range, and how many travel solo. Welcome To Travel says around 80% of its East Coast travellers come solo; Ultimate says most people book solo.
- A leader early on. The first three days set the tone. A guide who runs the first nights out does the ice-breaking for you.

Thirty days from Sydney to Cairns with one group: Byron Bay, the Gold Coast, Noosa, two nights in the Noosa Everglades, three days on K’gari (two nights camping), a Heart Reef scenic flight, Whitehaven Beach, Magnetic Island and the Great Barrier Reef. A guide travels with you from Sydney to Byron; after that it’s local guides and an on-call support team, so you have more free time than on a fully guided trip.
