Croatia Sailing: Split to Dubrovnik and Back by Boat

Croatia is the European summer every backpacker ends up chasing: a week under sail on the Adriatic, Split to Dubrovnik and back, with swim stops in bays you cannot reach by road and old-town nights in Hvar and Korčula. The water is clear enough to count the pebbles under the hull, the coast is a thousand islands long, and the boat does all the moving while you do the swimming.

The route: Split, Mljet, Dubrovnik, Korčula, Hvar, Split

The Croatia Sail Adventure runs 10 days and 9 nights, starting and finishing in Split. You spend the first night in a Split hostel near the Old Town meeting the group, then board the boat on day 2 and sail south. Day 3 is Mljet National Park, where you bike around the island's forest-ringed salt lakes and swim. Day 4 is Dubrovnik, with a guided walking tour of the medieval walls and Old Town. Day 5 is a pure sailing day to Trstenik with swim stops in secluded coves, day 6 is Korčula's walled island town, and day 7 is Hvar, with a hike up to the Spanish fortress for the view before the harbour bars take over. Day 8 you cruise back towards Split with more swim stops, day 9 is a day trip to swim among the waterfalls of Krka National Park, and day 10 you check out and travel on. Sea kayaking, snorkelling gear, a Split walking tour and a captain's dinner are all part of the package.

What you actually get for the money

This is a fully organised trip, not a bare boat charter. The price covers 7 nights on a premium sailing boat in twin or double ensuite cabins with air-con, Wi-Fi, an onboard bar, a dining area and a sun-lounge deck, plus 2 nights in a social mixed dorm in Split, 15 meals, a group leader for the whole trip, all transport in Croatia and every itinerary activity, with no pay-on-arrival extras. INTRO Travel runs it with around 35 people on the boat: big enough that there is always someone to swim with, small enough that you know everyone's name by Korčula. Cabins are compact, so bring a soft bag, swimmers, a dry bag for kayak days and one outfit for old-town nights. Flights, travel insurance (the operator requires it), visas and personal spending are on you.

When to sail Croatia

The boat runs summer departures only, which is exactly when you want to be on the Adriatic. June and September are the sweet spot: the sea is warm enough for long swims, the islands are busy but not rammed, and prices on shore are kinder. July and August are peak, with the hottest weather, the biggest Hvar nights and the most crowded Dubrovnik walls, so go early in the day for those. Shoulder months mean cooler evenings on deck, so pack a light jumper either way.

Getting there from Australia and building a longer trip

There are no direct flights from Australia to Croatia, so you will connect through a Middle Eastern or Asian hub, or through a major European city, and fly into Split. Most people make Croatia one chapter of a longer Europe summer: it sits neatly after Italy or before the Balkans, and buses and ferries link Split to Zagreb, Zadar and across the Adriatic to Italy. Because the trip finishes back in Split on day 10, you are not stranded at the far end of the country. Give yourself a buffer day before departure so a delayed flight does not cost you the boat, and check current entry requirements for your passport before you book.

Budget beyond the tour price

Your bed, boat, leader, activities and 15 meals are paid before you land, so the variables are the meals that are not included, drinks, and whatever you spend ashore. Croatia uses the euro and cards are widely accepted, but carry some cash for konoba dinners, island markets and the occasional water taxi. Hvar is the expensive night of the week; Korčula and Mljet are gentler on the wallet. Budget for travel insurance, which the operator requires, and a tip for the crew at the end of the week, which is customary.

Bonnes questions, réponses franches

What does the Croatia Sail Adventure include?

Seven nights on a premium sailing boat in twin or double ensuite cabins, two nights in a Split hostel, 15 meals, a group leader throughout, all transport in Croatia and every itinerary activity: Mljet National Park with a bike ride, Dubrovnik and Split walking tours, the Hvar fortress hike, a Krka waterfalls day trip, sea kayaking, snorkelling gear and a captain's dinner. Flights, travel insurance, visas and personal spending are not included.

How much is a Croatia sailing tour?

The 10-day Croatia Sail Adventure is from 2 399 € per person. That is the full price for the boat, Split hostel nights, leader, activities and 15 meals; you add flights, travel insurance and spending money.

When is the best time to sail Croatia?

Summer. The trip only runs summer departures, so check the live dates on the trip page. June and September give warm water with fewer crowds; July and August are hotter, busier and bigger on nightlife, especially in Hvar.

Is the Croatia sail trip good for solo travellers?

Yes. It is a group trip with a leader, shared twin or double cabins on the boat and mixed dorms in Split, so you are travelling with the same crew for ten days. Swim stops, kayaking and shared dinners do the introductions for you.

What kind of boat is it?

A premium sailing boat with twin or double ensuite cabins, air-con, Wi-Fi, an onboard bar, a dining area and a sun-lounge deck. Around 35 travellers share the boat.

Do I need a visa for Croatia?

Croatia is in the Schengen area. Check current entry requirements for your passport on Smartraveller or with the Croatian embassy before you book flights, and make sure your passport has enough validity.

Can I combine Croatia with other travel in Europe?

Easily. Split has good bus, ferry and flight connections, so the trip slots into a longer Europe summer. Many travellers arrive from Italy or the Balkans and continue on afterwards; the trip finishing back in Split keeps your options open.
