Morocco Tour: Sahara Camp, Chefchaouen, Fes and Marrakech

Morocco packs more contrast into 13 days than most countries manage in a month: Casablanca's seafront mosque, the blue lanes of Chefchaouen, the medieval maze of Fes, a night in an ensuite tent in the Sahara, a hike in the High Atlas and a final plunge into Marrakech's Jemaa el-Fnaa. It is the most sensory trip on our shelf, and the one where having a leader to handle every transfer matters most.

The route: Casablanca to Marrakech in 13 days

Day 1 you land in Casablanca, meet your group and trip leader and settle in. Day 2 takes in the vast Hassan II Mosque before heading north to Chefchaouen, and day 3 is the Blue City itself plus a cool-off at the Akchour waterfalls. Day 4 stops at the Roman ruins of Volubilis on the way to Fes, where day 5 is spent in the medina with pottery and mosaic workshops. Day 6 is a Berber village visit with mint tea in a local family's home. Day 7 is the journey to the edge of the Sahara and your desert camp, day 8 is a 4x4 dune drive, camel ride, sandboarding and sunrise over the dunes. Day 9 follows the Todra Gorge to Ouarzazate, day 10 explores the film-set kasbah of Ait Benhaddou and winds up into the mountains, day 11 is a High Atlas hike and a tagine cooking class, day 12 is Marrakech's medina and Jemaa el-Fnaa, and day 13 you check out and travel on.

Where you sleep and what is included

The accommodation is a big part of why this trip works. Two nights are in a traditional riad in the heart of the Fes medina with a rooftop terrace, one night is in an ensuite tent at a Sahara desert camp with an outdoor fireplace and sunrise over the dunes, one night is in a mountain guesthouse at Imlil in the High Atlas and one is in an Ouarzazate hotel with a pool. Rooms are twin or double share with ensuites. On top of 12 nights of beds you get 15 meals, a group leader from airport pickup, all transport in Morocco and every listed activity, with no pay-on-arrival extras. Groups are around 30 travellers. Pack for three climates: loose clothing that covers shoulders and knees for the cities, a warm layer for the desert night and the Atlas, and sturdy shoes for cobbles, dunes and the mountain trail. Flights, travel insurance (required by the operator), visas and personal spending are extra.

Best time to visit Morocco

Spring (March to May) and autumn (September to November) are the best months for this route. The Sahara is warm by day and cool by night, the Atlas is hikeable, and the cities are pleasant to walk. Summer brings serious heat in Marrakech and the desert, well into the 40s, so if you travel in July or August plan for early starts and long siestas. Winter is mild on the coast and in the cities but genuinely cold in the mountains and the desert after dark, so a warm layer is essential for the camp night.

Getting there and combining Morocco with Europe

From Australia you will fly via a Middle Eastern or European hub into Casablanca. Morocco sits a short hop from Spain, Portugal and France, so it is a natural add-on to a Europe trip: fly or ferry across after the tour finishes in Marrakech, or arrive from Europe before it starts in Casablanca. Build in a buffer day at the front so a delayed connection does not cost you the first group night. Check current entry requirements for your passport before you book, and make sure your passport has plenty of validity left.

Money, bargaining and budget beyond the tour

Morocco runs on the dirham, which you cannot buy before you arrive, so withdraw from an ATM at the airport or in the city. Cash rules in the medinas, at food stalls and for taxis; cards work in hotels and bigger restaurants. With 15 meals, every activity and all transport already paid, your extra spending is the remaining meals, drinks, souvenirs and tips. Haggling is expected in the souks: start low, stay friendly, walk away if the number is not right. Carry small notes for tipping guides and drivers, which is customary, and budget separately for travel insurance, which the operator requires.
