Your route, day by day
1 Day 1 · Sydney, collect the van, point it north (days 1–2)

Pick up your campervan in Sydney and give yourself two days to load up and land properly: a shakedown of the van's kitchen and bed setup, a stock-up at a big supermarket, and the city itself, Bondi-to-Coogee, the Opera House at dusk, a Manly ferry. Your itinerary and the whole booked adventure list are in your inbox, the campground kitchens up the coast are where your mates get made, and 2,000km of coast is queued up ahead. When you're ready, point north.

3 Day 3 · Byron Bay, surf, sunsets, van life finds its rhythm (days 3–6)

Byron is where the trip settles in. Learn to surf with a local school on the town's forgiving breaks, park up near the beach, walk to the Cape Byron lighthouse for sunrise at the mainland's most easterly point, and lose your afternoons to markets and drum-circle sunsets. Free-camp and campground options ring the hinterland; whales cruise past June–November. Four nights before the driving picks up again.

7 Day 7 · Noosa, cruise the river of mirrors (days 7–8)

An easy drive to Noosa, the coast at its most effortless. Cruise the Everglades, one of only two everglade systems on earth, through water so still it mirrors the paperbarks, then walk the coastal track past koalas to Tea Tree Bay and swim off the calm main beach. Park up, slow down, restock. A polished interlude before the sand begins.

9 Day 9 · K'gari (Fraser Island), leave the van, drive the sand (days 9–11)

Park the campervan safely on the mainland and swap it for three days on K'gari, the world's largest sand island, driving a 4WD in convoy behind a lead guide. Swim the impossibly blue Lake McKenzie, float crystal-clear Eli Creek, clamber over the SS Maheno wreck and soak in the Champagne Pools. Nights are beach camping, campfire, proper feed, star fields, with 75-Mile Beach as your highway. Meals and gear sorted; you drive and swim, then rejoin your van refreshed.

12 Day 12 · Airlie Beach & the Whitsundays, leave the van, sail the 74 islands (days 12–15)

Drive up to Airlie Beach and leave the van at the marina for the sail everyone talks about afterwards: two nights among the 74 Whitsunday Islands, snorkelling Hook Island's coral gardens, the Hill Inlet lookout where the tide swirls turquoise sand, and barefoot Whitehaven, 98% pure silica that squeaks underfoot. Nights either side in Airlie bring the lagoon and marina bars before you climb back behind the wheel.

16 Day 16 · Magnetic Island, take the van across, chase wild koalas (days 16–17)

Optional extra: roll the campervan onto the vehicle ferry from Townsville to 'Maggie', where the pace drops and the wildlife turns up. Loop the island's 23 bays, snorkel the fringing reef at Geoffrey Bay, and walk the Forts Walk at golden hour, one of the best places in the country to spot wild koalas dozing in the gums. Quiet beaches, big granite boulders, van parked a few steps from the sand.

18 Day 18 · Mission Beach, rainforest meets the reef (day 18)

A palm-fringed beach town where cassowary-dotted rainforest runs down to the Coral Sea, a mellow overnight to break the run north, and the launch point for Australia's most scenic skydive if you're game (15,000ft over reef and rainforest, an easy add-on). Park up by the beach, walk the rainforest tracks, or jump. Mission Beach earns its place either way.

19 Day 19 · Cairns & the Great Barrier Reef, drop the van, the grand finale (days 19–21)

Finish where the jungle meets the sea. Spend a full day on the Great Barrier Reef, snorkelling or diving the outer reef among turtles, rays and technicolour coral, then use your spare days for Atherton Tablelands waterfalls, a Daintree day trip, or the Esplanade lagoon and night markets. Drop the campervan in Cairns, toast three weeks of coast with the mates you've made along the way, or start here and run the whole thing in reverse.

Common questions about this trip

  • What's actually included, is the van the whole trip?

You get a campervan for the full 21 days AND every headline adventure booked in: the K'gari 4WD safari, the Whitsundays sail, the Great Barrier Reef day, a Byron surf lesson and a Noosa Everglades cruise. The van is your transport and your bed between the big days; your itinerary lists recommended campgrounds and free-camp spots at every stop. Magnetic Island's vehicle ferry is an optional extra.
  • Does the trip still run if nobody else has booked my dates?

Yes, always. Your van and every adventure are booked for your dates, full stop. There's no minimum and nothing to wait on. The mates come later and come easily: the K'gari convoy, the boat and the reef day all run with a group, and campground kitchens are the most sociable rooms on the coast.
  • What licence do I need, and is there a minimum age?

A valid full driver's licence from your home country (plus an International Driving Permit or certified translation if it's not in English). Budget campers usually hire from 18+; some larger vans need 21+. Tell us your age in the quote and we'll only put you in vans you can actually drive.
  • Do I drive on K'gari and sail the Whitsundays in my own van?

No, you park the campervan safely and join those as their own tours. K'gari is a 4WD-only sand island (you drive a proper 4WD in convoy), and the Whitsundays is a boat. Your van waits for you and you pick it back up after each.
  • Where do I sleep and can I free-camp?

You sleep in the van. Your itinerary lists recommended campgrounds and free-camp spots at every stop (rest areas, national parks, council sites), and we share the best free-camping apps once you book. Campground fees are paid on the night. City beaches and most urban areas are off-limits to overnighting, so plan those stops around a campground.
  • Why book the bundle instead of just hiring a van and sorting tours myself?

Two reasons: the adventures are booked, sequenced and timed to your drive so nothing sells out or clashes, and it's one price with one of the Wanderlust crew handling every reservation. You could piece it together across ten browser tabs, the bundle just means you don't have to, and you're covered if a date needs moving.
  • Is the price fixed?

The adventures are a fixed price; the van moves with the season, the van you pick and the one-way fee, so the headline is a 'from' price for two sharing a van. We quote your exact all-in price for your dates before you pay anything. No surprises at pickup.
  • Can I do this solo, or is it better with two?

Both work. The 'from' price assumes two sharing one van (which is where campervans get cheap). Solo is absolutely doable. Every guided day runs with a group, and the campgrounds and hostel bars up the coast are where solo vanners find their mates. It just costs a bit more per head since you're not splitting the van.
  • What's the cancellation policy?

Cancellation terms for this trip are set by the operator and confirmed on your booking voucher. Refunds mirror the operator's policy, if they can refund, so can we. Wanderlust handles the refund for you, refunds mirror the operator's terms 1:1 (including if the operator cancels) and we chase it on your behalf. Message us for the exact day-by-day terms before you book.
