New Year's Eve on Australia's East Coast: Sydney, Byron Bay, Airlie Beach or Cairns

Where to spend New Year's Eve on the East Coast: Sydney's harbour fireworks, Byron Bay's alcohol-free Soul Street, Airlie Beach and Cairns, and how to plan a trip around the night.

The Wanderlust crew · Updated · 8 min read

Short answer: Sydney is the New Year’s Eve the world watches: fireworks at 9pm and midnight over the harbour, 48 official vantage points, most of them free, with the best free spots full by afternoon. Byron Bay does the opposite, a free alcohol-free street party called Soul Street. Airlie Beach and Cairns both put on free foreshore fireworks at 8:30pm and midnight, warm water and a hostel crowd that has been on the same route as you for weeks. Pick the night first, then build the trip so you arrive two days early, because the beds and the boats around 31 December sell out before anything else on the coast.

Prices are per person in AUD and update from our live listings.

Sydney: the harbour fireworks

Sydney’s official program runs two fireworks displays, at 9pm and at midnight, over the Harbour Bridge and the water between the Opera House and the North Shore. There are 48 official vantage points around the harbour. The majority are free, including Barangaroo Reserve, Circular Quay east and west, Campbells Cove, Hickson Road Reserve and a string of parks in Balmain and Darling Point. Others are ticketed and sell out months ahead; the national park islands (Clark Island, Shark Island, Goat Island) require a ferry ticket of $47.71 per person on top of free entry, and were already booked out when we checked in October.

The Sydney Opera House Forecourt is free but ticketed, with tickets released at 10am on 26 December. The Cahill Expressway runs a free public ballot. Bradleys Head, Strickland Estate and North Head in Sydney Harbour National Park are free with no ticket, though Strickland Estate only guarantees entry between 5pm and 6pm and then admits people until it is full.

How to do it on a backpacker budget:

  • Pick a free site and arrive early. The popular free parks fill during the afternoon. Thornton Park in Balmain is described by the organisers as a site that becomes congested. Bring water, food and something to sit on, and assume the toilets have queues.
  • Check the alcohol rules for your site. Most public vantage points are alcohol-free; a few, like Strickland Estate, are licensed.
  • Do not plan to drive. Roads close across the harbour foreshore from the afternoon. Public transport runs late, and the official site publishes the transport plan and road closures closer to the date.
  • Book the bed now. Hostel beds for 30 and 31 December are the first to go on the whole coast.

Get your bearings in the days before with the Afternoon Discovery Cruise, a 90-minute harbour cruise for $79, and the Bondi to Coogee walk. Your first week in Sydney has the rest.

Byron Bay: Soul Street

Byron Bay does New Year’s Eve without the booze. Soul Street is a free, family-friendly street party run by Byron Shire Council since 2014, with food stalls, lighting and stages along Jonson Street and in Dening Park on the Main Beach foreshore. The council runs it as an alcohol-free celebration zone, so the main street and the beachfront are dry on the night and policed as such. It is a very different night from Sydney: more music, more people on foot, no fireworks to position for.

Why travellers still pick it: Byron between Christmas and New Year is the busiest town on the coast, the beach is the day plan, the surf is warm, and the hostel crowd makes its own night. The trade-off is price and availability. Byron hostels in that week are the hardest beds to find in Australia; book as soon as your dates are set. The Byron Bay guide has the town; the half-day surf lesson is $79 for a New Year’s Day you will actually remember.

Airlie Beach: fireworks on the foreshore

Whitsunday Regional Council puts on two free fireworks displays on the Airlie Beach foreshore on New Year’s Eve: an early one at 8:30pm and one at midnight. The foreshore is the lagoon, the parkland and the main street, so you are never far from the hostels. The Airlie Beach Lagoon is free, stinger-free and patrolled, which matters in December because the open beaches are in stinger season.

Two ways to do the Whitsundays around the night:

  • Sail before, party after. A 2-night boat that returns on 30 or 31 December lands you back in town with a boat-load of new friends for the night. Overnight trips start from $449 on Whitsundays sailing trips by price; each boat sails on set days, so match the return date to the 31st.
  • Party, then sail on 1 or 2 January. The day sail with lunch and stinger suits included is $199 and a gentler New Year’s Day than a 6am 4WD pickup.

December is wet season, with Hamilton Island averaging 29.9°C and about 293mm of rain in January, so expect humid days and afternoon storms. The Whitsundays in summer covers what that means for sailing.

Cairns: the Esplanade

Cairns Regional Council runs a free New Year’s Eve celebration on the Esplanade: in the most recent edition, a free concert on the Western Events Lawn from 5pm with fireworks at 8:30pm and midnight, plus smaller 8:30pm displays at Edmonton and the Palm Cove jetty, and extra buses from Spence Street after the midnight fireworks. The council publishes the program for each year closer to the date; the shape of it (free, on the Esplanade, two fireworks) has held.

Cairns is the end of the route for most travellers, so New Year’s Eve here is a finish-line party. The Esplanade Lagoon is the free swim. December reef trips are wet-season trips: warm water, stinger suits on, occasional weather cancellations. The Full Day Outer Great Barrier Reef Tour is $269, and the rest are on Great Barrier Reef tours by price. The reef in summer has the full picture.

Planning the route around it

New Year’s Eve is a fixed point, and the East Coast is a line, so decide the direction first.

Finish in Sydney. Start in Cairns in early December when the reef boats are quieter, work south through the Whitsundays, K’gari and Byron Bay, and arrive in Sydney two days before the 31st. This is the direction that gets you the harbour fireworks with the whole coast already done.

Start in Sydney. Christmas on Coogee Beach, New Year’s Eve on the harbour, then north. The Oz Adventure, 10 Days Sydney to Brisbane, a guided group tour from $1,199, covers Sydney to Byron to Brisbane in the first week of January; check the departure calendar for the date after the 1st.

Be in Byron or Airlie for the night. Start in Sydney around 20 December, bus to Byron for Christmas and New Year, then head north in January; or start in Brisbane, do K’gari just after Christmas and be in Airlie Beach on the 31st.

If you would rather not build it, a Travel Mates semi-guided trip pre-books the hostels, bus legs and guided adventures in a fixed sequence from the start date you choose. You travel solo on the set schedule and meet people on the guided days. Count the days from your start to work out where you will be on 31 December: on the 17-day Sydney to Cairns, a start on 20 December puts New Year’s Eve in the Whitsundays; on the 21-day, where the Whitsundays are days 12 to 15, a 20 December start does the same. A December start is priced at peak: $3,339 for the 17-day and $3,559 for the 21-day. Bookings are usually confirmed within 24 hours, and the calendar only shows start dates where every guided leg has seats.

Three rules whichever you pick: book the beds for 30 December to 1 January first, book the boat or 4WD trip second, and book the bus legs for the days either side of the night several days ahead. The rest of the trip can be looser.

FAQs

Are the Sydney New Year’s Eve fireworks free?

Yes at most of the 48 official vantage points, including Barangaroo Reserve, Circular Quay and Campbells Cove. Some sites are ticketed, from the $47.71 ferry fare to the harbour islands up to premium paid venues that sell out months ahead. The Opera House Forecourt is free but ticketed, with tickets released at 10am on 26 December.

What time are the Sydney fireworks?

Two displays: 9pm and midnight. The 9pm display is the family show; the midnight display brings in the new year.

Is Byron Bay good for New Year’s Eve?

If you want a beach town and a street party, yes. Soul Street is free and alcohol-free, with stages and food stalls on Jonson Street and Dening Park. If you want fireworks over water or a big night out, Sydney, Airlie Beach or Cairns suit better. Byron’s beds are the hardest to find on the coast that week.

Does Airlie Beach have fireworks on New Year’s Eve?

Yes, two free displays on the foreshore run by Whitsunday Regional Council, at 8:30pm and midnight.

What happens in Cairns on New Year’s Eve?

A free council-run celebration on the Esplanade with a concert and fireworks at 8:30pm and midnight, plus extra late buses. The program is published each year closer to the date.

When should I book hostels for New Year’s Eve?

As soon as your dates are set. Beds for 30 and 31 December in Sydney and Byron Bay are the first to sell out on the East Coast, and Airlie Beach is not far behind.

Can I sail the Whitsundays over New Year’s Eve?

Boats sail through the holidays on their normal set days. To be in Airlie Beach for the fireworks, pick a boat that returns on 30 or 31 December, or sail on 1 or 2 January. Overnight trips start from $449.

How do I work out where a Travel Mates trip puts me on New Year’s Eve?

Count from your start date along the fixed itinerary on the tour page. The route and the sequence do not change; only the start date does. On the 17-day Sydney to Cairns, a 20 December start lands New Year’s Eve in the Whitsundays.
