Overview

This is Byron Bay's classic learn-to-surf morning: the 8:30am half-day session that takes complete beginners and returns wave-riders in time for a late lunch. The format is the clever bit. Instead of defaulting to the nearest sand, the coaches check conditions each morning and drive you to whichever beach between Lennox Head and Ballina has the softest, cleanest learner waves, which usually means fewer people in the water too.

The morning runs like this: pickup from your Byron Bay accommodation or a meeting point in town, then the drive south to the chosen beach. You're suited up with a soft board, a rashie and a wetsuit if the water calls for it, then it's a stretch and body-movement session on the sand, the ocean safety briefing, and the beach lesson on paddling, positioning and the pop-up. After that you're in the water with your coach for the bulk of the session, with a ratio of one coach to eight surfers so you get real feedback between waves, not just a wave goodbye. Then it's back in the van to Byron.

The whole thing is three to four hours including return travel, with boards, wetsuits and transport included. You need to be able to swim 50 metres unaided and be 15 or over for the group lesson. The 8:30am start runs October through April, when the water is at its friendliest. Bring swimmers, a towel, hat, sunscreen and a water bottle, and expect to be back in town for happy hour with a story that's finally true.

Itinerary at a glance

1 8:30am · Pickup in Byron Bay

The van collects you from your accommodation or a central meeting point in town, confirmed when you book. From there it's the drive south to whichever beach has the best learner waves that morning.

1 On the sand · Gear up, stretch and beach lesson

You're fitted with a soft board, a rashie and a wetsuit if needed, then run through a body-movement and stretching session, an ocean safety briefing and the beach lesson on paddling and standing up.

1 In the water · Surf with your coach

The main block of the session is in the water, with your coach pushing you onto waves and fixing your technique between them. One coach to eight surfers keeps the feedback personal.

1 Around midday · Back to Byron

Boards go on the roof and the van runs you back to town, roughly three to four hours after pickup depending on the beach used.

Common questions about this trip

  • Where do I get picked up and when?

Pickup is from your Byron Bay accommodation or a meeting point in central Byron Bay for the 8:30am session. The exact pickup spot and time are confirmed when you book, so keep an eye on your confirmation and be ready a few minutes early.
  • Which beach will we surf at?

It changes daily. The coaches pick the beach with the best learner waves that morning from the stretch of coast between Lennox Head and Ballina, south of Byron Bay. That flexibility is why the lesson works for first-timers: softer waves and fewer people in the water.
  • Do I need to be able to swim or have surfed before?

No surfing experience is needed; the session is built for complete beginners. You do need to be able to swim 50 metres unaided, and the group lesson is for ages 15 and over. Younger surfers are directed to a private lesson instead.
  • What should I bring and wear?

Swimmers or boardshorts, a towel, a hat, sunscreen and a water bottle. Soft board, rashie and a wetsuit (when the water needs one) are supplied, and all gear is included in the price.
  • How much of the time is actually surfing?

The three to four hour window covers the return drive, the ocean safety briefing, a stretch and warm-up on the sand and the beach lesson, with the main block of the session spent in the water with your coach. You'll be surfing for most of it.
  • What happens if the weather turns?

Lesson times are subject to availability, season and weather conditions, and the coaches choose the beach each morning based on the surf. If conditions are unsafe the operator decides on the day and will move you to another session.
  • When does the 8:30am session run?

The morning session runs from October through April. Outside those months the half-day lesson runs as an afternoon session instead.
  • What's the cancellation policy?

Cancelling 31 or more days before departure carries a 25% fee on the package. Within 30 days there is no refund. Date changes cost $55 AUD up to 7 days before the start, or $75 AUD within 24 hours of the start. The operator may postpone or cancel for natural disasters such as bushfires or floods, with no refund. Wanderlust handles the refund for you, refunds mirror the operator's terms 1:1 (including if the operator cancels) and we chase it on your behalf.
