Cheaper still if you have a bed: the 2-Lesson Surf Pack

Byron Bay 2-Lesson Surf Pack (Oct to April), from $139. Two lessons with professional instructors, a maximum of six per group, at whichever of Byron Bay, Lennox Head or Ballina has the best learner waves each day. Return transport from Byron and all gear (board, wetsuit, rashie) are included. It runs October to April.

Who it suits: anyone already staying in Byron, for example on a bus pass with hostel nights booked. You pay for the lessons and nothing else.

For a single session, the Byron Bay Half-Day Surf Lesson is $79 with pickup, and the 3-Hour Small Group Surf Lesson at Clarkes Beach is $89. Cheapest single lesson: the half-day lesson at $79.

Best value with food: Spot X

Want to actually learn: the 5-day Byron Bay Surf Tour

Byron Bay Surf Tour, from $409. Five 3 to 4 hour lessons on five consecutive days with Surfing Australia-certified instructors, boards, wetsuits and rash vests, and pickup and drop-off for each session. It is lessons only, so book your own bed. The course is built to take you from your first pop-up to riding unbroken waves on your own.

Who it suits: anyone staying in Byron for a week who wants to leave able to surf, not just stand up once.

How to get the cheapest price

  • Compare the bed, not just the price. A cheaper package often means more people per room. Check how many beds are in the dorm before you book.
  • Count the meals. No Byron package includes food. Allow for six meals in town, or pick Spot X, where they’re included.
  • Winter is cheapest, but the water is colder. Two of the packages above drop $50 from May or June to August. Wetsuits are included on all of them.
  • Lessons only, if you already have a bed. The 2-Lesson Surf Pack is the cheapest way to get two coached sessions if you’re already staying in Byron.
  • Found it cheaper elsewhere? Our Price Match Promise says we’ll do our best to beat it on an identical product.
