Spot X is the kind of place surf movies are set: an absolute-beachfront camp at a secret surf location, well off the beaten track, where the commute to the waves is measured in bare footsteps. Three days here is less a tour than a lifestyle trial.
The format is simple and correct: a surf lesson for each night of your stay, with all equipment provided during sessions and coaches who build you from the sand up, it's pitched as the perfect way to start your surfing career, and consecutive days are exactly how the pop-up becomes permanent. Between lessons the beach is your living room, and the remoteness is the feature: no traffic, no queues at the break, just the real Australia doing its thing.
Everything domestic is handled, breakfast, lunch and dinner all included, with dorm-share accommodation steps from the water. You come back sunburnt, salt-cured, standing up on waves, and slightly smug about knowing where Spot X is.
Absolute beachfront surf camp
A lesson every night of stay
All meals included
Secret off-track location
All surf gear for lessons
Dorm beds steps from waves
Spot X is right on the sand at Arrawarra, in a National Marine Park, so you can be in the water a minute after leaving your room. Settle into your dorm or teepee (bedding included), join the afternoon activities or just kick back, then head to dinner at 6pm followed by a campfire and the night's entertainment. Your first surf lesson is the next morning, unless you arrive by bus before about 7:30am.
Breakfast from about 7am (cereals, porridge, toast and fruit), then your surf lesson starts around 7:30am and runs two to three hours, all gear provided and instructors in the water with you. Lunch is from noon to 1pm. Afternoons are free for a free activity, the volleyball court, table tennis, a movie in the TV room or a lie in the sun. Optional extras at extra cost include surf rafting, kayaking, or a kangaroo trek to a local driving range home to about 400 wild kangaroos. Dinner at 6pm leads into the campfire and night-time entertainment. Vegetarian, vegan and gluten-free options are available.
Breakfast, then one more surf lesson before you head off, with lunch to follow if you are still around. To use all of your inclusions, leave around the same time you arrived on day one.
