Lessons only: Byron Bay

The Byron Bay Half-Day Surf Lesson from $79 is the 8:30am session: pickup included, a three to four hour window that covers travel, the safety briefing, a warm-up and time in the water, with boards and wetsuits supplied. The instructors pick whichever beach has the best learner waves that morning. It runs October to April.

The Byron Bay 2-Lesson Surf Pack from $139 is two of those mornings, each at the day’s best beach across Byron Bay, Lennox Head and Ballina, with return coach transport from Byron, all gear (surfboard, wetsuit, rashie) and a maximum of six people per group. Ages 15 and up; it also runs October to April.

The Byron Bay Surf Tour from $409 is the five-lesson version: five sessions of three to four hours, all equipment, and pickup to drop-off transport for each one. No accommodation.

Surf and stay: Byron Bay

The Byron Bay Surf & Stay (3D/2N) from $279 gives you two nights in a teepee-style bell tent at a Byron Bay surf camp and one surf lesson per day, with equipment supplied during lessons.

How the days run: no activities on arrival day, just check-in and a meet-and-greet with the surf crew. Lessons are at 8:30am on the day after you arrive and on your departure day (check out first), at whichever of the half-dozen beaches around Byron has the best learner waves. You are back at the accommodation around 12 to 1pm, with the afternoon free. If you reach the accommodation before 7:30am on arrival day, you can surf that day too.

Meals are not included (no breakfast either) and neither is bike hire.

Surf and stay: beachfront camp at Arrawarra

The Surf & Stay Spot X (3D/2N) from $389 is the full-immersion option: an absolute-beachfront surf camp at Arrawarra, off the beaten track, with one surf lesson for each night of your stay, breakfast, lunch and dinner every day, dorm-share accommodation and all surf equipment during lessons. The excludes list is empty.

How the days run: settle into your dorm or teepee on day one, join the afternoon activities or relax, dinner around 6pm, then a campfire and entertainment. Day two starts with breakfast from about 7am and a two to three hour lesson from around 7:30am; lunch is from noon, afternoons are free for included activities, movies or optional extras (surf rafting, kayaking, kangaroo trekking), and dinner is at 6pm with another campfire. Day three is breakfast and your second lesson before you leave. Arrive by bus before about 7:30am on day one and your first lesson moves to that morning.

This camp is also the surf stop on our longer Travel Mates East Coast trips: the 28-day and 33-day Sydney to Cairns trips both include three days and two nights at Spot X, with the overnight coach from Sydney and every meal at camp.

Which format to pick

  • One morning, see if you like it: the half-day lesson. Pickup and gear are included, so there is nothing to organise.
  • Two mornings for the pop-up to stick: the 2-lesson pack. Small groups and the best beach chosen each day.
  • Surf every day and keep Byron’s evenings: the Byron Bay Surf & Stay. Lessons in the morning, the town in the afternoon, food your own.
  • Surf, eat and sleep on the beach: Spot X. Every meal is cooked for you and the waves are out the front.

Lesson-only products in Byron run October to April. Both surf and stays include the gear. For every Byron Bay surf and stay side by side on price, including ones we don’t sell, see the cheapest surf camp in Byron Bay.

A Bali alternative

If the surf trip is part of a longer loop, Canggu runs the same format. The Canggu Surf & Stay, Bali (2 Nights) from $249 is two nights dorm-share in Canggu, breakfast both mornings, a welcome drink on arrival, and a surf lesson each day with a mobile surf school that picks the break that is working for learners. Lunch, dinner and airport transfers are not included. Longer versions run to four nights from $499 and six nights from $759. Our Canggu surf and stay guide covers the detail.
