Learning to surf in Canggu, Bali: surf camp vs group tour

Learn to surf in Canggu, Bali: 3, 5 and 7 day surf and stay packages vs Bali group tours, what a surf camp day looks like, best season and beginner tips.

The Wanderlust crew · Updated · 7 min read

Short answer: for learning to surf in Bali, a Canggu surf & stay is the simplest way, bundling accommodation, daily lessons and boards for 3, 5 or 7 days. The 5 Day/4 Night, from $499, is the sweet spot. The Bali group tours also start in Canggu, but then keep moving.

Canggu is where most people learn to surf in Bali, and for good reason: a long black-sand stretch with soft beginner waves at one end, a reef break at the other, a lineup of surf schools in between, and a café on every corner for the post-surf collapse. The question is how to structure it. A surf & stay package puts you in Canggu for days with lessons built in. The Bali group tours start in Canggu too, but then keep moving. Here’s how to choose.

Why Canggu for beginners

The surf in Canggu breaks over sand at the main beginner beach, Batu Bolong, which matters when you’re going to fall off a hundred times. The waves there are slow, forgiving and roll in a long way, giving you plenty of time to stand up. Further along, Old Man’s and Echo Beach serve up more power once you’ve got a few sessions in you. Everything is a short scooter ride apart, boards are cheap to hire, and the schools are used to total beginners.

The other reason is the scene. Canggu is full of people in exactly your situation, which means surf buddies, sunset beers and someone to go to the warung with. It’s hard to feel lost here.

Surf & stay packages: 3, 5 or 7 days

A surf & stay bundles your accommodation in Canggu with daily surf lessons, boards and the basics so you don’t have to piece it together. It’s the simplest way to go from “never stood on a board” to “paddling out on my own” in a set number of days.

What a surf camp day actually looks like

Early morning. Up before the heat. Breakfast at the camp, then a short walk or shuttle to the beach. Morning is when the wind is lightest and the water glassiest, so the first lesson of the day is usually the best.

Lesson one. Warm-up and the land drill: how to pop up, where to lie on the board, what your feet are supposed to be doing. Then into the whitewater with an instructor pushing you into waves and shouting encouragement. Expect to swallow some ocean. Expect to stand up on day one, briefly.

Midday. Back to camp, lunch, pool, nap. The sun between 11am and 2pm is the enemy and nobody surfs through it.

Afternoon. Second session, or a video analysis where the instructor plays footage of you falling and explains why. This is genuinely the fastest way to improve.

Evening. Sunset at the beach, dinner with the group, early-ish night because your shoulders are going to hurt tomorrow. Repeat.

Which length to pick

3 Day / 2 Night from $249: the taster. Enough to stand up and catch whitewater, not enough to turn or pick your own waves. Good if you’re passing through Canggu on a longer Bali trip. 3 Day/2 Night Surf & Stay - Canggu, Bali.

5 Day / 4 Night from $499: the sweet spot. By day four or five most people are paddling for their own waves and standing up consistently, and the muscle memory sticks. 5 Day/4 Night Surf & Stay - Canggu, Bali.

7 Day / 6 Night from $759: the one where you actually become a surfer. You get a rest day, you move from whitewater to green waves, and you’ll leave with a routine you can repeat anywhere. 7 Day/6 Night Surf & Stay - Canggu, Bali.

Who a surf & stay suits: anyone whose main goal in Bali is to learn to surf, solo travellers who want a ready-made crew in Canggu, and people who’d rather base themselves in one place than tour around.

Bali group tours: surfing as part of the trip

Our Bali group trips are fully guided group tours with fixed departure dates. You join a group and a tour leader in Canggu and travel Bali together, with surfing as one of many things you do, not the whole point.

Bali Adventure, 9 Days Canggu to Gili T from $1,299 starts in Canggu, heads to Ubud for the rice terraces and temples, then over to the Gili Islands for snorkelling and the kind of beach bars you’ll be talking about for a while.

Bali Adventure, 12 Days Canggu to Ubud from $1,799 is the longer loop, with more time in the island’s cultural centre and the mountains.

Who a group tour suits: travellers who want to see Bali, not just surf it, who like having a leader to handle logistics, and who want a built-in group from day one. If surfing is a nice-to-have rather than the mission, this is your pick.

Can you combine them?

Yes, and it’s a smart move. Do a surf & stay first, then join a group tour departure that starts in Canggu. You arrive at the group already able to surf, already acclimatised, and with a week of Canggu stories. Check the group tour departure dates and book the surf & stay to finish the day before.

Best season to learn to surf in Canggu

Bali has two seasons and they matter more for surfing than for anything else.

Dry season, roughly May to September. The trade winds blow offshore on Bali’s west coast, which is where Canggu is. Offshore wind grooms the waves into clean lines and holds them up longer, so this is prime time. The downside is it’s also busier, and the swell can get bigger in July and August, which is fine at the beginner beach but worth knowing.

Wet season, roughly November to March. The winds switch and blow onshore on the west coast, making Canggu’s waves messier and choppier. It still works for lessons, especially in the mornings before the wind picks up, and the crowds thin out. The east coast gets the clean conditions in these months, but that’s a different trip.

Shoulder months, April and October. Often the best of both: lighter winds, smaller crowds, decent waves. If you can pick your dates, pick these.

Beginners don’t need big swell. You need small, clean, regular waves, which Batu Bolong delivers for most of the year. Don’t over-think it.

Beginner surf tips nobody tells you

  • Wear a rashie or wetsuit top. Board rash on your chest and stomach is real and it hurts more than the falls.
  • Reef-safe sunscreen, zinc on your face, reapply. The Bali sun off the water will cook you in an hour.
  • Big board, no ego. A 8 to 9 foot soft-top is the fastest way to learn. You can look cool later.
  • Fall flat, not head first. Cover your head with your arms when you come off. The board is heavy and it’s attached to you.
  • Learn surf etiquette early. One surfer per wave, the person closest to the peak has priority, don’t paddle out through the lineup. Instructors will drill this. Listen.
  • Rest your shoulders. Paddling uses muscles you don’t have yet. Stretch, eat well, don’t skip the rest day.
  • Hire a scooter only if you can already ride one. Canggu traffic is chaos and the roads are narrow. If you’re new to it, use ride-share apps.

What to pack for a Bali surf trip

A rashie, two sets of swimmers, reef-safe sunscreen and zinc, a hat, thongs, a light rain jacket for the wet season, and a dry bag for your phone. Boards and wax are provided on the surf & stay packages.

FAQs

How many days does it take to learn to surf in Bali?

Most people stand up on day one and are catching their own whitewater waves by day three. Five days gets you to consistent, confident pop-ups. Seven days gets you onto green (unbroken) waves and leaves you with the basics to keep surfing anywhere.

Is Canggu good for beginner surfers?

Yes, it’s one of the best beginner spots in Bali. Batu Bolong breaks over sand with slow, long rides, there are plenty of schools and the water is warm year-round. More advanced breaks at Old Man’s and Echo Beach are a few minutes away for when you progress.

Surf & stay or group tour: which should I book?

If learning to surf is the mission, a surf & stay (3, 5 or 7 days) in Canggu. If you want to see Bali with a group and a leader and surf along the way, a guided group tour. Doing a surf & stay first and then joining a group tour departure from Canggu is the best of both.

What’s the best month to surf in Canggu?

May to September for the cleanest waves on the west coast, with April and October as excellent quieter alternatives. The wet season (November to March) still works for beginners if you surf early mornings.

For everything else on the island, the Bali hub has the full list.
