Byron Bay surf lessons are the East Coast rite of passage: long, soft, learner-friendly waves, warm water most of the year, and instructors who have put more first-timers on their feet than anyone in the country. If you are going to stand up on a surfboard once in your life, this is the bay.

You get picked up or meet at the beach, suit up in a wetsuit, grab a soft-top board and run through a beach lesson: how to paddle, how to pop up, where on the wave to aim. Then it is into the whitewash, where your instructor picks waves, gives you a push and shouts the timing until the pop-up happens on its own.
The good schools do not default to the nearest sand: one school picks whichever beach has the best learning waves that morning, Byron, Lennox Head or Ballina, and another moves between Byron's beaches to match conditions to your level. Dolphins out the back are common.
One morning, to see if you like it: the Byron Bay Half-Day Surf Lesson (Oct–April) from $79 is an 8:30am session, three to four hours with pickup, boards and wetsuits included, back in town for a late lunch. The 3-Hour Small Group Surf Lesson in Byron Bay from $89 is the local-legend option: taught by Byron's longest-serving instructor, groups capped at ten, all gear included.
Two lessons, so the first was not a fluke: the Byron Bay 2-Lesson Surf Pack (Oct–April) from $139 gives you two mornings, max six per group, Byron pickup included. Muscle memory needs repetition, and this books both sessions in one go.
Make it a trip: the Byron Bay Surf & Stay (3D/2N) from $279 puts you in a teepee-style bell tent at a Byron Bay surf camp with one lesson every day and gear for each session, meals your own. The Byron Bay Surf Tour from $409 is a five-day progression course: five consecutive three-to-four-hour lessons with Surfing Australia-certified instructors, boards, wetsuits, rash vests and transport included, built to take you from whitewash to unbroken waves. Ages 13 and up.
The half-day lesson and the 2-lesson pack only run October to April, when the water is warmest. The 3-hour lesson, Surf & Stay and 5-day tour are not listed with a seasonal window; winter is still surfable, the water just needs the wetsuit the schools supply.
Bring swimmers to wear under the wetsuit, a towel, water, reef-safe sunscreen and a hair tie. The school cancels when the waves turn dangerous, no exceptions, which tells you how seriously to take the briefing on rips and board etiquette. Keep your board between you and the shore, and do not paddle out alone afterwards until you can read conditions yourself.
Yes. Lessons happen in waist-to-chest-deep whitewash with an instructor close by, but you need to be comfortable in moving water. Weak swimmer? Say so at booking and stay shallow.
October to April is the warm-water window, and two of the lessons only run then. Winter is quieter and cooler, with wetsuits doing the work.
One lesson gets most people standing in the whitewash. Surfing properly takes repetition, which is why the 2-lesson pack from $139, Surf & Stay from $279 and the 5-day tour from $409 exist.
Easily. Every option is a group lesson, the small-group products cap at six to ten, and you will not be the only one turning up alone. The Surf & Stay is the most social.
