Short answer: yes, Byron Bay is worth visiting if you want surf, beaches, a headland walk and a social hostel scene, and two to three days is enough for most people. It is in New South Wales, about 165 km (roughly two hours) south of Brisbane and a short drive from Gold Coast Airport. There is no train station in town: you arrive by coach, car or from the Ballina Byron or Gold Coast airports. It is not cheap, but the beaches, the Cape Byron walk and the sea are free.

Questions: is it worth it?
Is Byron Bay worth visiting?
Yes, for most backpackers. You get easy surf lessons, the lighthouse walk, whales in season and a big hostel crowd in one small town. It is a poor fit if you want quiet or cheap: it is busy in summer and school holidays. Our Byron Bay backpacker guide covers where to stay and what to skip.
How long do you need in Byron Bay?
Two to three days. That covers a surf lesson, the Cape Byron walk, a beach day and a night out. You can see the highlights in one long day if you are passing through, but you will spend most of it on the road or at the lighthouse. Add a day for a hinterland trip or a skydive.
Is Byron Bay in NSW or Queensland?
New South Wales. It is on the far north coast, a little south of the Queensland border. Gold Coast Airport sits right on the border at Coolangatta, which is why many visitors fly into Queensland and drive south.
Is Byron Bay better than Noosa or the Gold Coast?
They suit different trips. Byron is the bohemian, social one with the best learner surf and nightlife; Noosa is calmer with more national park and water; the Gold Coast is a big city strip with theme parks. Our Byron Bay vs Noosa comparison and the Noosa questions guide go deeper.

Questions: cost
Is Byron Bay expensive?
Yes, by Australian backpacker standards. Beds and eating out cost more than in most coastal towns, especially in summer and school holidays. The free things are the beaches, the Cape Byron walk and the lookouts. For a low-cost start, the Byron Bay Surf & Stay (3D/2N) is from $279, and our Byron Bay tour prices page lists every tour.
Why is Byron Bay so expensive?
Demand. It is a small town with limited land, strong tourism all year and high property prices, so accommodation and food cost more. Booking beds early and travelling in shoulder months keeps the bill down. Surf lessons have a clear price: see our surf lesson prices and how much a surf camp costs.
What is the cheapest way to try surfing in Byron?
The lowest price right now is the Byron Bay Half-Day Surf Lesson (Oct--April) at $79. The cheapest surf camp in Byron Bay guide compares the multi-day options.
Questions: safety and the beach
Is Byron Bay safe?
Generally yes, and violent crime against visitors is uncommon. The real risks are the ocean, alcohol and sun. Rips are common on unpatrolled beaches, and lifeguards and surf life savers warn that water and alcohol do not mix. Swim only where there are flags, keep valuables out of parked cars, and watch your drink on a night out.
Can you swim at Byron Bay?
Yes, between the red and yellow flags. Byron Shire Council lists Main Beach as lifeguarded five days a week through the year, with extra patrols in school holidays, and other beaches such as Clarkes Beach patrolled on set dates (council patrol calendar, Byron Shire Council). Check the dates before you go and do not swim at an unpatrolled beach if you are unsure.
Can you surf in Byron Bay?
Yes, and it is one of the easiest places in Australia to learn. Main Beach and The Pass are the usual learner spots, and schools pick the best beach each day. The 3-Hour Small Group Surf Lesson in Byron Bay is from $89 with gear included. Wategos is another well-known break; ask a local surf school which beach suits your level that day.
