Overview

Broken Head is ten minutes south of Byron and feels a world away: coastal rainforest running straight down to rocky coves and crashing surf. This walk takes you through it with a Bundjalung guide, stopping at significant places to share local history and traditional stories.

Along the 1.6km return track you'll pick up some Bundjalung language and learn about bush food, natural medicine, and the tools, weapons and artefacts used here for generations. Keep an eye out on the way: pods of dolphins, wallabies and white-bellied sea eagles are regular sightings.

The walk is moderate and takes about 90 minutes. It meets at the start of the Three Sisters Walking Track, next to Broken Head Holiday Park (184 Beach Road). Parking in the reserve is paid and busy, so allow time to find a spot, and bring good walking shoes, water, a hat and sunscreen.

"This is a "must do" activity for anyone living in or visiting Byron Bay. … is a courageous, very knowledgeable, friendly Arakwal Elder who shared the history of the area and some personal stories. We tasted delicious bush foods and learned about bush medicine. The cliff walk was spectacular and the whole tour left me feeling more connected. Highly recommended."

"Our group ranged from 79 years to 7 years old and this tour was loved by all. The bush tucker feast and tea at the end were the perfect end."
