Most people climb to the lighthouse, take the photo and leave. This walk tells you what Cape Byron meant long before the lighthouse was there. The headland's Bundjalung name is Walgun, and your guide is Delta Kay, an Arakwal Bundjalung woman whose ancestors have lived around Byron Bay for thousands of years and passed their customs, knowledge and stories down to her. It's an easy guided walk past the Cape's significant places, with local history and traditional stories told along the way.
You meet directly in front of The Pass Cafe at 1 Brooke Drive, down at The Pass, and set off at walking pace. Along the way you pick up some Bundjalung language and learn how the plants around you were used as bush food and natural medicine, and about the tools, weapons and artefacts used here for generations. It's hands-on and unhurried, with time to ask questions. At the end you taste a selection of native bush foods with a cup of bush tea and a biscuit.
The walk takes about 90 minutes and suits any fitness level. Wear covered shoes and sun-protective clothing and bring a water bottle. Parking at The Pass is paid and fills up fast, especially on weekends, so leave time to find a spot or walk in from town along the beach. The tasting is included; getting to the meeting point is up to you.
