Overview

Bangalow Parklands was once grazing land. It has since been regenerated with hundreds of native plant species that matter to the Bundjalung people, and this walk along Byron Creek shows you what they are and what they're for. Your guide is Delta Kay, an Arakwal Bundjalung woman whose family's knowledge of this country has been passed down for thousands of years, and she's a respected elder in the Byron Shire.

You meet at Bangalow Weir Parklands on Deacon Street, beside the large toilet block, and follow the creek. Along the way Delta points out edible bush tucker plants and the ones used for natural medicine, jewellery, fibre, tools and weapons, teaching you to spot the native fruits, roots, nuts, seeds and leaves, while sharing local history and traditional stories from her ancestors. You'll learn some Bundjalung language too, and if you're lucky you'll spot Binging the river turtle or Junbung the platypus in the creek. The walk finishes with a tasting of bush tucker foods, a cup of bush tea and a biscuit.

It's an easy 90 minutes at walking pace in the hinterland village of Bangalow, about 15 minutes' drive inland from Byron Bay. Transport to Bangalow isn't included, so sort your own ride. Wear covered shoes, bring a water bottle and sun protection, and come hungry enough to try everything at the end.

Common questions about this trip

  • Where do we meet?

At Bangalow Weir Parklands on Deacon Street, Bangalow, beside the large toilet block. Your start time is confirmed when you book; arrive a few minutes early so the group can set off together.
  • How do I get to Bangalow from Byron Bay?

Bangalow is a hinterland village about 15 minutes' drive inland from Byron Bay. Transport isn't included, so drive, share a ride or take a local bus and allow time to walk to the parklands.
  • How fit do I need to be?

It's an easy walk of about 90 minutes along the creek at a relaxed pace, with frequent stops at plants. Any fitness level is fine.
  • What should I wear and bring?

Covered shoes, sun protection and a water bottle. The tasting, bush tea and biscuit are provided at the end of the walk.
  • Will I see a platypus?

Sometimes. The operator says guests are sometimes lucky enough to spot Binging the river turtle or Junbung the platypus in Byron Creek, but they're wild and nothing is promised. Walk quietly near the water and keep your eyes on the surface.
  • What happens in bad weather?

The walk is outdoors and weather dependent, and the operator decides on the day. Bring a rain jacket if showers are forecast.
  • What's the cancellation policy?

Bookings cancelled or changed with less than 48 hours notice, or not joined, cost 100%. In severe weather (heavy rain and dangerous winds) the operator cancels and guests get a full refund or can join another tour. The tour runs in light rain and wind. If fewer than 4 guests book, the operator may cancel and offer a full refund or another date. Wanderlust handles the refund for you, refunds mirror the operator's terms 1:1 (including if the operator cancels) and we chase it on your behalf.
