Short answer: yes, Noosa is worth visiting, especially for a national park coastal walk, the Everglades and the beach drive to Double Island Point. It is about 160 km north of Brisbane (roughly two hours by road) and around half an hour from Sunshine Coast Airport. You do not need a car in town, because Hastings Street, the main beach and the national park entrance are close together, but a tour helps for the Everglades and the Cooloola beaches. Two nights is enough for most travellers.
Facts below were checked on 27 October 2026 against Queensland Parks and Wildlife Service (QPWS), Noosa Council and the Queensland Government, named in each answer. Tour prices are from our current listings.
Questions: is it worth it?
Is Noosa worth visiting?
Yes, if you like water and wildlife more than nightlife. Noosa has a national park headland, calm river water, the Everglades and the beach drive north, and it is the gateway to K’gari (Fraser Island). It is quiet at night. Our Noosa backpacker guide and Noosa tours compared cover the detail.
How many days do you need in Noosa?
Two nights is enough: one day for the national park walk and Main Beach, one for a tour such as the Everglades or Double Island Point. Add a day if you want to surf or visit Australia Zoo. If you are heading on to K’gari, plan your tour start around your Noosa nights.
Noosa or Byron Bay: which is better?
Byron wins for nightlife and beginner surf; Noosa wins for nature, calmer water and the K’gari link. Most people on the East Coast stop at both. See Byron Bay vs Noosa and the Byron Bay questions guide.
Questions: getting there and getting around
How far is Noosa from Brisbane?
About 160 km, roughly two hours by road. QPWS describes Noosa National Park as 160 km north of Brisbane (QPWS). Coaches take a little longer once they make stops.
How far is Noosa from Brisbane Airport?
Around 148 km, about one hour 40 minutes by road without heavy traffic. Shuttle buses and transfers run from the airport, and many travellers take a coach or train-and-bus combination instead.
How far is Noosa from Sunshine Coast Airport?
About 25 to 30 km, around 30 minutes by road. It is the closest airport, so flying to Sunshine Coast saves most of the drive. Taxis, rideshare and shuttles meet flights.
Do you need a car in Noosa?
No, not for the town itself. Hastings Street, Main Beach and the start of the Noosa National Park coastal walk are walkable from each other, and local buses cover Noosa Junction and Noosaville. A car is useful only for places outside town. Most travellers skip it and join a tour for the Everglades, Teewah Beach and K’gari.
Are there free buses in Noosa?
Sometimes. Noosa Council has run the Go Noosa Loop Bus, route 065, free during Christmas and Easter holiday periods, and TransLink says it was the only route with free travel in the 2025/26 Christmas and Easter 2026 holidays, after earlier wider free-bus offers ended (TransLink). Check TransLink or Noosa Council for the dates before you rely on it.
Questions: the beach, river and national park
Can you swim at Noosa Main Beach?
Yes. It is a north-facing beach at the river mouth with sheltered water. Noosa Council contracts Surf Life Saving Queensland, and patrols run at set times, mainly weekends and public holidays in the season, so check patrol hours on the Beachsafe app before swimming and swim between the flags when they are up (Noosa Council).
Can you swim in the Noosa River?
Yes, in calm sections, but check conditions. The river has tidal currents near the mouth, boat traffic and mangrove edges. Use common sense, swim near other people, and read the signs where you enter. The Everglades are known as a place where you can swim, as noted by Visit Noosa, but follow your guide’s advice.
How long is the Noosa National Park coastal walk?
The Coastal Walk is 10.8 km return and takes about four hours, according to QPWS. If you only want a short version, Hell’s Gates is 2.7 km one way from the start. The track is unsealed in places with some steps and steep sections, so wear proper shoes and carry water.
Can you see koalas in Noosa National Park?
Often, yes, but there is no guarantee. QPWS says koalas are often seen in trees near the day-use area and along the walking tracks. Look up, walk quietly and keep your distance. Never feed or touch wildlife.
Can you surf in Noosa?
Yes, but it depends on swell. The points inside the national park work well on the right swell and are mostly for experienced surfers, while Main Beach is often small. For learners, the Learn to Surf Safari: Noosa to Double Island Point is from $159 and takes you to a gentler wave by 4WD. See surf lesson prices.
Questions: Everglades, North Shore and K’gari
Is the Noosa Everglades worth it?

The Noosa Everglades Serenity Afternoon Cruise is from $89, and the Noosa Everglades Guided Kayak Day Trip is from $189.
How do you see the Noosa Everglades?
By boat, kayak or paddle board, usually on a guided trip. The Everglades proper begin at Lake Cootharaba, about 20 minutes north of Noosa Heads, so you need transport or a tour with pick-ups. Choose the cruise for an easy half day or the kayak trip for a full active day.
Do you need a permit to drive on Noosa North Shore and Teewah Beach?
Yes, a vehicle access permit, and the vehicle must be a 4WD. QPWS says Teewah Beach is open beach for four-wheel drives only and that permits are required on designated tracks and beaches in the Cooloola Recreation Area. One-day permits were listed at $15.40 booked online (checked Oct 2026, QPWS fees). If you join a tour that drives the beach, check what it includes before you book.
