Overview

A proper day under sail to the Whitsundays' quieter side. Most day boats race to Whitehaven and back; this one heads for the fringing reef and Langford Island's sandbar instead, a long tongue of white sand with resident turtles grazing off the edge of it. It's the day-trip answer for anyone who wants a real sail, a snorkel and a sunset without committing to two nights in a shared bunk.

Check in at Coral Sea Marina (North End, Meeting Point B) 30 minutes before departure. Departure is 9:30am from June to October and 10am from November to May. It's about a two-hour sail out, under canvas when the wind plays along and under motor when it doesn't, to the first fringing reef for a snorkel with the eco guides. Lunch is served on deck, then the boat anchors off Langford Sandbar for two hours: snorkel straight off the sand, walk the bushwalk, or claim a bean bag. The boat leaves the sandbar mid-afternoon and sails home into the sunset, docking at Airlie around 6pm in winter and 6:30pm in summer.

All up it's about 8.5 hours. Lunch, snacks, snorkel gear, lycra stinger suits and park fees are included. Alcohol is BYO (cans, no glass, no red wine) and the crew supply the esky and ice. Ages 12 and up, maximum 30 guests. Snorkelling is optional, but you should be comfortable swimming on your own in open water. Runs daily, year round.

Common questions about this trip

  • How much does Whitsundays Day Sail cost?

Whitsundays Day Sail starts from $199 per person with us. Pick a date on this page to see the exact price for your departure.
  • Can I get Whitsundays Day Sail for less elsewhere?

We check Whitsundays Day Sail's price on other booking sites every day. Today it's $219 on 2 other Australian booking sites and $199 with us. If you find it for less, tell us and we'll do our best to beat it.
  • Where do I check in and how early?

Check in at Coral Sea Marina, North End, Meeting Point B, 30 minutes before departure. From 1 June to 31 October that's 9am for a 9:30am departure; from 1 November to 31 May it's 9:30am for a 10am departure. Bus transfers aren't included on this one, so make your own way to the marina.
  • What should I bring?

Swimmers, a towel, hat, sunglasses, sunscreen and practical clothing and footwear. An underwater camera is worth it for the turtles. If you're drinking, bring cans: no glass and no red wine on board. The crew provide the esky and ice.
  • Do I need to be a strong swimmer?

Snorkelling is optional, but if you do go in you should be comfortable swimming independently in open water. The eco guides brief everyone before the first snorkel and the gear and lycra suits are included.
  • Will I see turtles?

Turtle sightings at Langford Sandbar are common, but they're wild animals and the operator doesn't guarantee them. The sunset on the sail home is also weather dependent and varies with cloud cover.
  • What happens in bad weather?

Snorkel and anchorage locations can change on the day depending on wind and sea conditions. If conditions are unsafe, the operator offers an alternative vessel or a reschedule to another date where available.
  • I get seasick. Is this a bad idea?

The boat is a stable catamaran, so it doesn't roll the way a monohull does. If you're prone to it, take seasickness medication about 30 minutes before boarding.
  • Is there an age limit?

Yes, guests need to be 12 or older. The boat carries a maximum of 30 passengers.
  • What about stingers?

Lycra stinger suits are provided free to everyone on board. They cover about 90 percent of the body but not the hands, feet or face.
  • Can I get vegan food on this trip?

Vegetarian options are included, but a vegan meal can't be guaranteed on this trip. You're welcome to bring your own food and the team will keep it cold for you. Tell us your dietary needs when you book and we'll pass them on.
  • What's the cancellation policy?

Cancellation terms for this trip are set by the operator and confirmed on your booking voucher. Refunds mirror the operator's policy, if they can refund, so can we. Wanderlust handles the refund for you, refunds mirror the operator's terms 1:1 (including if the operator cancels) and we chase it on your behalf. Message us for the exact day-by-day terms before you book.
