The Whitsundays' inland side, and the easy day between sailing trips. Cedar Creek Falls is a freshwater waterfall dropping into a wide rock pool about 30 minutes from Airlie Beach, ringed by white cedars, Alexandra palms, wild orchids and a lot of butterflies. You swim it, walk it, then spend the afternoon at a waterfront beach bar looking out over the Coral Sea and the islands with lunch and a drink included.
Check in at 10:15am at the operator's office on Airlie Beach's main street for a 10:30am departure. The bus reaches Cedar Creek Falls around 11:15am and you have about an hour and 45 minutes there: morning snack, a swim in the rock pools (optional), and the guided walk to the top of the falls with the guide's run-down on the plants and birds. Around 1:30pm you're at the beach bar for lunch, chosen from the menu, with one beer, wine or soft drink included, then free time until 3:15pm. Back at the office at 3:30pm, or stay on at the bar and take the courtesy coach back later.
Five hours all up, daily, ages four and up. The ground around the falls is natural and uneven, so you need to be comfortable on rocks and dirt tracks; enclosed shoes are recommended. Depending on the season the falls can slow to a trickle, and the rock pools are still there to swim. Bring swimmers, a towel, hat, sunscreen and a reusable water bottle.
