Short answer: Christmas Day is the one day of the year the East Coast mostly stops. Large shops and supermarkets close (in Queensland it is a legislated “closed day” for big retailers), public transport runs on holiday timetables, and many day tours skip 25 December. Everything reopens on Boxing Day. The week either side is the busiest of the year: the summer school holidays start on 12 December in Queensland and 18 December in New South Wales, so book the K’gari 4WD trip and the Whitsundays boat weeks ahead, buy food on 24 December, and spend the day itself on a beach with every other traveller in town.

The dates that matter
| Date | What happens |
|---|---|
| 12 December 2026 | Queensland school holidays start (run to 26 January 2027) |
| 18 December 2026 | NSW school holidays start (run to 3 February 2027) |
| 19 December 2026 | Victorian school holidays start (run to 26 January 2027) |
| Friday 25 December | Christmas Day, public holiday everywhere |
| Saturday 26 December | Boxing Day, with a substitute public holiday on Monday 28 December |
| Friday 1 January 2027 | New Year’s Day, public holiday |
Three states with three sets of holiday dates means the whole coast is busy from mid-December to late January. That is when hostels in Byron Bay, Noosa, Airlie Beach and Cairns fill, and when boats and 4WD trips with a fixed number of seats sell out. The December and January peak season guide has the prices by start month; this guide is about the days themselves.
What’s open on Christmas Day
Shops and supermarkets. In Queensland, Christmas Day is a closed day under the trading hours rules: large retailers and non-exempt shops cannot open. Small independent shops, service stations and some convenience stores can. In New South Wales it is a restricted trading day with the same effect for the big chains. Buy what you need on 24 December, including water, snacks and anything for the beach, and do not count on a supermarket run on the day.
Public transport. It runs, but on reduced timetables. Sydney Trains runs a modified Saturday timetable on Christmas Day. In South East Queensland, Translink buses run to a public holiday timetable with some routes not running at all, trains run a special Christmas timetable, and the CityCat runs a special timetable too. Check the journey planner the day before and give yourself extra time.
Hostels. Open, full and social. Reception hours are often shorter on the day, so sort your check-in time in advance if you arrive on 25 December. Many hostels run a Christmas lunch or a shared meal for guests; ask when you book rather than assuming.
Cafes, bars and pubs. Some open, most do not. Chinatown in Sydney is the classic exception. Assume closures and treat anything open as a bonus.
Tours. This is the one to check. Boats, 4WD trips and day tours decide their own Christmas Day schedule, and many run on 24 and 26 December but not the 25th. The calendar on each tour page shows the dates with seats; if 25 December is not offered, that trip does not run that day. Multi-day trips that span Christmas, like a 3-day K’gari tag-along from $579, are a good way to spend the day somewhere spectacular with a ready-made group of travellers.
Boxing Day. The sales open, shops reopen, trains and buses run holiday timetables and tours are back. If you want to do nothing on the 25th and everything on the 26th, that works.
What to book before you arrive
Beds in the big hostel towns are deep and can usually be rebooked. These cannot:
- Multi-day K’gari 4WD trips. Each departure has a fixed number of vehicles, and the January school holidays are the busiest window on the island. Compare every option on K’gari tours by price; from Rainbow Beach the 3-day tag-along starts at the 3-day 4WD tag-along at $579.
- Whitsundays overnight boats. Fixed berths, fixed sailing days. Every boat we sell is on Whitsundays sailing trips by price; overnight trips start from $449.
- Reef days from Cairns and Port Douglas. Big boats, but the Christmas week fills them. See Great Barrier Reef tours by price.
- Coach legs. The Greyhound pass itself is open-dated, but each seat still needs a booking. Between mid-December and late January, book legs several days ahead instead of the night before. The East Coast pass is $319.
- Surf camps with a fixed intake. Limited beds per week.
If you would rather not juggle any of it, a Travel Mates semi-guided trip pre-books the beds, the bus legs and the guided adventures in sequence, so a Christmas-week start has the K’gari trip, the boat and the reef day already locked. You travel the route solo on a set schedule and meet people on the guided days. The 21-day Sydney to Cairns costs $3,559 for a December start; the 7-day K’gari + Whitsundays Combo is $1,499 all year. The tour page calendar only offers start dates where every guided leg has seats, checked live. Bookings are usually confirmed within 24 hours.
Where to be on Christmas Day
The East Coast does Christmas on the sand. Pick the town you want to wake up in on the 25th and plan the route around it.
Sydney: Coogee Beach. Travellers’ Christmas in Sydney has moved from Bondi to Coogee. Bondi banned alcohol on the beach years ago and Waverley Council now actively manages the day with glass bans and checkpoints, so the big backpacker gathering happens at Coogee instead; around 15,000 people came in 2025 and police reported no arrests. Go early, take water and shade, and expect the same alcohol rules on the sand. The Bondi to Coogee coastal walk is open and free, and it is a good way to arrive. More on the city in your first week in Sydney.
Byron Bay: Main Beach. Byron is at its fullest between Christmas and New Year. Main Beach and The Pass are where the day happens, the lighthouse walk is open, and the town is walkable so closed buses do not matter. Surf lessons run through summer; the half-day lesson is $79, though check the calendar for the 25th. The Byron Bay guide covers the rest.
Brisbane: Streets Beach. The free lagoon at South Bank, with real sand and lifeguards, opposite the CBD. Moreton and Straddie day trips run on most days of the holidays; see the Brisbane guide.
Noosa and Rainbow Beach. Noosa Main Beach is the family option; Rainbow Beach is the K’gari launch pad, and spending Christmas on the island itself on a multi-day trip is the move if your dates line up. Hervey Bay or Rainbow Beach explains which side to start from.
Airlie Beach: the Lagoon. A free, stinger-free swimming lagoon on the foreshore, open year-round and patrolled. December is stinger season on the open beaches, so the lagoon is where the town swims. Overnight boats sail through the holidays; a day sail with lunch and stinger suits included is $199 if you only have the one day. The Whitsundays in summer covers the wet-season reality.
Cairns: the Esplanade Lagoon. Same idea as Airlie: a free saltwater lagoon on the Esplanade, because the beaches are stinger-season and the water is warm. Reef boats run most days of the holiday week; check the 25th on the tour page. The Great Barrier Reef in summer covers what the reef is like in December.
The weather you are signing up for
December is early summer in Sydney and Byron Bay and the start of the wet season in the tropics. In Cairns the December mean maximum is 31.8°C with 419mm of average rainfall, and January is similar. Hamilton Island in the Whitsundays averages 29.9°C and about 293mm in January. Marine stinger season runs roughly November to May along the tropical coast, so every snorkel in the Whitsundays and on the reef is in a stinger suit, which the boats supply. The cyclone season officially runs 1 November to 30 April, with most activity from January to March. Boats and reef trips occasionally cancel for weather, so leave a spare day before any flight.
The upside is real: warm water, long days, every hostel full of people on the same plan. The trips still run.
A sample Christmas week
- 22 to 23 December: arrive in Sydney, do the coastal walk, buy supplies on the 24th.
- 24 December: overnight bus to Byron Bay, or fly to Brisbane and bus north.
- 25 December: Christmas on the beach (Coogee if you stayed in Sydney, Main Beach if you moved to Byron).
- 26 to 28 December: Byron surf lesson, then Noosa.
- 29 to 31 December: K’gari 3-day tag-along, finishing in time for New Year’s Eve in Rainbow Beach, Noosa or Brisbane.
Or do it the other way: start the holidays in Cairns while the reef boats are quieter in the first weeks of December, and work south to be in Sydney or Byron for New Year’s Eve. New Year’s Eve on the East Coast compares the options.
FAQs
Is everything closed on Christmas Day in Australia?
Large shops and supermarkets, yes. In Queensland it is a legislated closed day for big retailers and in NSW a restricted trading day. Hostels, some cafes, service stations and small independents stay open. Public transport runs on reduced holiday timetables. Everything reopens on Boxing Day.
Do tours run on Christmas Day?
Some do, many do not. Each boat and tour sets its own schedule, so check the calendar on the tour page: if 25 December is offered, there are seats; if it is not, that trip does not run that day. Multi-day trips that span the 25th are the easiest way to spend Christmas somewhere spectacular.
How far ahead should I book for Christmas on the East Coast?
For multi-day K’gari 4WD trips, Whitsundays overnight boats and reef days in the Christmas week, book as soon as your dates are fixed; a few weeks ahead at minimum. Hostel beds are easier to find but the social hostels in Byron Bay and Airlie Beach fill first. Bus legs should be booked several days ahead rather than the night before.
Where do backpackers spend Christmas Day in Sydney?
Coogee Beach. The travellers’ gathering moved there from Bondi, where alcohol is banned on the beach and the day is heavily managed. Around 15,000 people came to Coogee in 2025. Arrive early and take water and shade.
Is December a good time for the Great Barrier Reef and the Whitsundays?
It is wet season and stinger season: hot, humid, with afternoon storms and stinger suits on every snorkel. The water is warm and the trips run, with occasional weather cancellations, so build in a spare day. Our reef in summer and Whitsundays in summer guides go into detail.
Does a Travel Mates trip run over Christmas?
Yes. Any start date in December or January is priced at the peak rate; the 21-day Sydney to Cairns is $3,559. The itinerary is fixed and only the start date is flexible, so pick the start that puts you in the town you want on the 25th. The calendar only shows dates where every guided leg has seats.
What is the weather like on the East Coast at Christmas?
Early summer in Sydney and Byron Bay, wet season in the tropics. Cairns averages a 31.8°C maximum and 419mm of rain in December; Hamilton Island averages 29.9°C and about 293mm in January. Marine stingers are around roughly November to May and the cyclone season runs 1 November to 30 April.
Can I still get a bus seat over Christmas?
Yes, but book each leg several days ahead between mid-December and late January. The Greyhound East Coast pass is $319 and is open-dated, but every seat still needs a reservation.
