The Rainbow Beach case

Rainbow Beach is a small beach town two hours north of Noosa, with coloured sand cliffs, the Carlo Sand Blow lookout and a direct line to the barge to the island. Most K’gari tours leave from here, and the two Noosa tours pick up here too.

What you can book:

On a tag-along you drive a 4WD in a guided convoy behind a lead guide and share the wheel, and a licence is needed to drive. Passengers are welcome. Camping gear is supplied on the Rainbow Beach tag-alongs: tent, mat, sleeping bag and pillow.

Who it suits Anyone doing the East Coast by bus, travellers who want a campfire night, solo travellers who want the convoy as the social part, and anyone who wants the most departures to choose from.

The Hervey Bay case

Hervey Bay is the northern gateway, with its own barge from River Heads to the western side of the island. It is also the whale town, and the only place with a K’gari tour on the island’s west coast.

What you can book:

The whale day does not visit Lake McKenzie or the Maheno, which are on the eastern side. In-water whale swims happen when conditions allow, and are not promised.

Who it suits Anyone who wants a bed instead of a tent, a private room, a trip in whale season, or an easier start coming down the coast from the north.

Beds or tents

This is the real decision. Rainbow Beach is mostly camping in twin-share tents at enclosed beach camps. Hervey Bay is mostly beach houses with hot showers. Nights in a tent are genuinely cold in winter (June to August), so the beach-house tours earn their keep then. In summer and autumn camping is comfortable and the tag-alongs come into their own. Whales

Hervey Bay’s sheltered Platypus Bay is where humpbacks stop and rest on the way south, roughly July to October. If you travel in that window, a Hervey Bay departure lets you do an island day one day and whales the next. Outside it, whales are not a reason to pick Hervey Bay. What is the same either way

Return ferries, permits and fuel are included on every guided tour and tag-along we list. Tides run the day, so your guide sets the order of stops. Dingoes are wild and protected in every month. The ocean on the eastern beach is not for swimming; the lakes, Eli Creek and the Champagne Pools are where you get wet. If you drive on a tag-along, check the liability excess and the optional reduction on the tour page.
