K'gari Tours from Rainbow Beach

6 options · from $275 AUD

Rainbow Beach is the closest town to K'gari's southern tip. Tours drive a few minutes north to Inskip Point, take the short barge across to Hook Point and are driving up the ocean beach almost straight away, so less of your trip goes on transit and more on sand.

From Rainbow Beach you can do the island as a guided day trip where someone else drives, a 2-day tag-along with one night at a beach camp, or a 3-day tag-along with two. On a tag-along you drive a 4WD yourself in a convoy behind a lead guide; ferries, permits, fuel, camping and meals are covered.

Rainbow Beach K'gari tours compared

Every tour here crosses on the Inskip Point barge. Pick by how many nights you want on the island, then by whether you want to drive.

Prices are per person in AUD. Bookings are on request and confirmed within 24 to 48 hours.

Why start from Rainbow Beach

The Inskip Point barge lands you on the eastern beach, the side with 75 Mile Beach, Eli Creek, the Maheno wreck and the Champagne Pools. Hervey Bay tours cross from River Heads to the island's west side and head inland first. Both reach the same icons; from Rainbow Beach it is simply a shorter run onto the beach highway, which is why most tag-alongs leave from here.

Rainbow Beach is a small town on the bus route between Noosa and Hervey Bay. Tag-along briefings start early in the morning, so arrive the afternoon before, sort your drinks and snacks, and walk up to the Carlo Sandblow for sunset.

How to choose a Rainbow Beach K'gari tour

One day: the K'gari Day Tour (Rainbow to Rainbow) is eight hours in a purpose-built 4WD with a guide at the wheel, in groups of up to 20. It covers the Maheno, Eli Creek and Lake McKenzie, with a rainforest walk tide permitting, and lunch is included. No licence needed.

Two days: the K'gari 2-Day 4WD Tag-Along Adventure runs a maximum of 16, with the Maheno and Eli Creek on day one, then the Central Station rainforest and Lake McKenzie on day two, and a night at an enclosed beach camp in between.

Three days: the Dingo's K'gari 3-Day 4WD Tag-Along from Rainbow Beach is our best seller, with Lake McKenzie on day one, a full day exploring and Lake Wabby on the way out, two nights at an enclosed camp metres from the beach. The K'gari (Fraser Island) 3-Day Adventure from Rainbow Beach follows a similar route and can add hostel nights in Rainbow Beach either side. The K'gari 3-Day Tag-Along Safari leaves from Noosa and picks up in Rainbow Beach, is for 18 to 35s, and camps at a private dingo-fenced beach camp.

The rule of thumb: one day only really gets you the headline stops at pace. Three days adds Lake Wabby, the slower northern run and a second night around the fire.

Best time to go and what to bring

K'gari runs year-round and the freshwater lakes are swimmable in every season. April to November is the sweet spot: milder days, lower humidity and firmer sand. July to November adds humpback whales passing Indian Head. Summer is hotter and stormier but quieter.

Tides set the order of stops on every tour, so the itinerary moves around on the day. Bring swimmers, a towel, a head torch, insect repellent, sunscreen and a jumper for camp nights. Drivers need a full licence; minimum ages and licence rules vary by tour and are on each tour page. Do not swim in the ocean, never feed the dingoes, and keep food locked away.

Tours from Rainbow Beach: your questions

How do you get from Rainbow Beach to K'gari?

By barge from Inskip Point, a short drive north of town, to Hook Point on the island's southern tip. Every tour on this page includes the barge, so you only need to get yourself to Rainbow Beach.

Should I start my K'gari tour from Rainbow Beach or Hervey Bay?

Rainbow Beach if you want a tag-along with beach camping and the quickest run onto 75 Mile Beach. Hervey Bay if you want a bed instead of a tent or a whale-season boat day. We list the Hervey Bay tours on their own page.

Do I have to drive on a Rainbow Beach tag-along?

No. Licensed drivers take turns at the wheel and everyone else rides along. If you would rather nobody in your group drove, the day tour has a guide driving the whole way.

Is a day trip to K'gari from Rainbow Beach worth it?

Yes if a day is all you have: it covers Lake McKenzie, Eli Creek and the Maheno. You will spend a good part of it in the 4WD, so if you can spare the time, two or three days is the better trip.
