Fraser Island (K'gari) 4WD Hire

3 options · from $1,059 AUD

Fraser Island 4WD hire (the island is now called K'gari) hands you a lifted, automatic Toyota Landcruiser, a barge ticket and the world's largest sand island, then leaves you to it. No convoy, no guide, no schedule: Lake McKenzie before the tour buses, Eli Creek at golden hour, the Champagne Pools when the tide says so.

Hire runs three, four or five days, priced per vehicle and quoted on enquiry, with up to five people sharing the Landcruiser and the cost. Recovery gear, the barge transfer and an audio guide are included; you sort your own permit, food and fuel. Every driver must be over 25 with at least three years' driving experience.

Self-drive on K'gari: what it is actually like

Driving K'gari means sand, not bitumen. 75 Mile Beach is a gazetted road with a speed limit and light planes landing on it, driven on the hard sand around low tide; inland tracks are soft, rutted and slow. An automatic Landcruiser takes the clutch anxiety out, the recovery gear covers the moment the island tests you, and the audio guide narrates landmarks as you pass.

The east coast run writes itself: Lake McKenzie, Eli Creek, the Maheno, Indian Head, the Champagne Pools, Central Station. The joy of self-drive is going back to the beach you liked instead of the next one on the list.

3, 4 or 5 days: which K'gari 4WD hire to book

The K'gari 4WD Hire, 3 Days is the classic taster: enough for the east coast icons at a reasonable pace. The K'gari 4WD Hire, 4 Days adds the day where the island starts feeling like yours, the morning you return to a favourite spot or follow a track just to see. The K'gari 4WD Hire, 5 Days is the full island-time version, long enough to see the icons at off-peak hours and reach the far stretches.

All three are priced per vehicle, up to five people per vehicle, before food, fuel and permit.

Self-drive suits groups of three to five who are confident drivers over 25, happy to plan around tides and cook for themselves. Tag-along tours suit solo travellers, anyone who wants a guide reading the sand and the tides, and people who would rather the meals, camping and permits were sorted. Travelling alone, a tag-along is the better buy; with a crew, hire.

Permits, tides and what to bring

K'gari is a national park, and every vehicle needs a vehicle access permit, bought in advance from Queensland Parks and Wildlife; camping needs a camping permit too, booked for specific sites. The hire price does not include these, or food or fuel, so budget and book before you arrive.

Tides run the island. Plan each day's beach driving around low tide, stay off the beach for a couple of hours either side of high tide, and never drive through saltwater. Swim the lakes and creeks, not the ocean, which has strong currents and sharks. Dingoes are wild and protected: lock food in the vehicle and never feed them. Pack water, more food than you think, insect repellent, sunscreen, a torch, rubbish bags and a full tank before the barge.

Fraser Island 4WD hire: your questions

Do I need 4WD experience to hire a Landcruiser on K'gari?

Every driver must be over 25 with at least three years' driving experience, on a full licence. The vehicle is automatic and comes with recovery gear, but sand driving is a skill: drop tyre pressure as advised at pickup, keep momentum in soft sand and stick to low tide on the beach.

Is K'gari 4WD hire priced per person or per vehicle?

Per vehicle. Up to five people share the Landcruiser, so the hire price works out at a fraction of that each when the car is full.

Can I take a normal hire car to Fraser Island?

No. Only high-clearance 4WD vehicles are allowed on K'gari, because you drive on soft sand tracks and the beach, not bitumen. That's why Fraser Island car hire means a 4WD (4x4) hire like the Landcruiser here, with the barge and recovery gear included.

Do I need a permit to drive on K'gari?

Yes. A vehicle access permit is compulsory and not included in the hire, and camping needs its own permit. Both come from Queensland Parks and Wildlife and should be sorted before you board the barge.

How many days do you need on K'gari?

Three days covers the icons. Four lets you slow down. Five gets you the far reaches and the quiet hours at the famous spots. Most first-timers book three and wish they had booked four.
