Tours are great until you find your perfect beach and the schedule says leave. This is the antidote: your own lifted Toyota Landcruiser, automatic transmission, three days, and the world's largest sand island arranged entirely around your whims.

The hire is built for the job, recovery gear included (sand is a teacher), barge transfer to the island sorted, and an audio guide that narrates as you roam so you know what you're looking at. The east coast run writes itself: Lake McKenzie's white-sand clarity, a float down Eli Creek, the fizzing rock pools at the Champagne Pools, and the Maheno shipwreck at whatever hour the light suits your camera.

You sort your own vehicle access permit, food and fuel, that's the price of total freedom, and it's a bargain. Up to five people per vehicle makes the split-cost maths friendly. Every driver must be over 25 with at least three years' driving experience. Three days is the classic taster; the island rarely lets people leave on time.
