Cheap East Coast Australia Backpacker Packages (2026): What the 'From' Price Actually Includes

Cheap East Coast Australia backpacker packages compared like for like: which from-prices are activities only, and what a bus pass and beds add to the total.

The Wanderlust crew · Updated · 6 min read

Short answer: most cheap East Coast backpacker packages advertise an activities-only price. That covers the tours but not the bus or your beds, and the version that adds them costs 1.7 to 3 times as much. Our East Coast Starter Package is $689 per person for a 2-day K’gari 4WD tag-along and a full-day Whitsundays sail. The East Coast Big Three Package adds a Great Barrier Reef day from Cairns, from $879 (Green Island) or $939 (two outer reef sites). Both are priced as the tours added together, rounded down, so neither costs more than booking the tours separately. Add a Greyhound East Coast pass ($369 for 21 days) and hostel dorms (roughly $35 to $60 a night) and you have the whole trip.

Our prices are per person in AUD and update from our live listings. Other companies’ prices are from their own websites on 27 October 2026, before peak-season surcharges, and they change.

The catch in ‘from’ prices

East Coast packages usually come in two versions with the same name:

  • Activities only: the big tours (K’gari, the Whitsundays, sometimes the reef). No bus, no beds. This is the low number in the headline.
  • Full package: the same tours plus a hop-on hop-off bus pass and hostel nights. This is what most people picture when they read “package”.

Both are fair products. Activities-only suits anyone who already has a bus pass, a campervan or flights. The problem is only when you compare one company’s activities-only price with another company’s full package. Always check whether transport and beds are in the price.

What the table shows: the activities-only versions are the cheap headline numbers, $749 and $899. Adding the bus pass and beds takes the same packages to $1,265 and $2,695. Our Starter Package is $689 for a 2-day K’gari trip and a Whitsundays sail. Package A’s $749 has a longer, 3-day K’gari trip but no reef day. Package B’s $899 has the same three adventures as our Big Three, with the outer reef; ours is $939 with the outer reef or $879 with Green Island.

Building the full trip with our packages

If you want the bus and beds too, add them yourself and you only pay for the nights you actually use:

  • Adventures: the Big Three Package, from $879.
  • Bus: a Greyhound East Coast pass, $339 for 10 days or $369 for 21 days, hop-on hop-off between Sydney and Cairns in either direction. We book it alongside the package.
  • Beds (estimate, not our price): hostel dorms along the coast run roughly $35 to $60 a night. Three weeks with one night on K’gari already covered is about 19 nights, or roughly $665 to $1,140.

For three weeks Sydney to Cairns, that’s the Big Three, a 21-day pass and about 19 dorm nights. At today’s prices that’s roughly $1,900 to $2,400 depending on the hostels, under Package B’s $2,695 full version. Package B also includes a Magnetic Island ferry pass and some extra activities at stops along the way, so compare the add-ons you actually want.

For 10 days Brisbane to Cairns, Package A’s $1,265 full version is the lower price if you don’t want a reef day. Our Big Three with a 10-day pass and six dorm nights costs more, but it includes the reef.

Which one suits you

You already have a bus pass, campervan or flights: an activities-only package. The Starter Package at $689 covers K’gari and the Whitsundays; the Big Three adds the reef.

You want everything sorted, including beds: a full package or a semi-guided trip. Our K’gari and Whitsundays combo at $1,499 includes the overnight bus north, a hostel night in Airlie Beach and two nights aboard a sailing boat. The 14-day semi-guided East Coast trip from $2,599 books every bed, bus and big adventure between Brisbane and Cairns.

You want the lowest total and don’t mind planning: a Greyhound pass, hostels booked as you go, and the adventures bought as a package so the big three are locked in. Our guide to what four weeks on the East Coast costs breaks the whole budget down, and bus pass vs group tour vs semi-guided compares the three ways to travel.

Questions: cheap East Coast packages

What is the cheapest East Coast Australia package?

Of the packages we sell, the East Coast Starter Package at $689 per person, for a 2-day K’gari 4WD tag-along and a full-day Whitsundays sail. It’s activities only. Elsewhere, the lowest headline prices we found on 27 October 2026 were $749 and $899, also activities only.

Do East Coast backpacker packages include accommodation?

Some do and some don’t, often under the same name. Activities-only versions include the nights on the tours themselves (a K’gari camp, or nights aboard a sailing boat) but no hostels or bus. Full versions add a bus pass and hostel dorms. Check the inclusions list before you compare prices.

Is a package cheaper than booking the tours separately?

Our package is never more than the same tours booked separately with us: each package is priced as its tours added together at today’s prices, rounded down to the nearest dollar ending in 9. What the package adds is one booking, me booking every part, and dates you can set now or later.

How much does the East Coast cost for three weeks on a budget?

Roughly $1,900 to $2,400 per person before food for three weeks Sydney to Cairns: K’gari, the Whitsundays and a reef day as a package, a 21-day Greyhound pass, and about 19 hostel dorm nights at $35 to $60. The hostel figure is an estimate; the package and pass are our prices on 27 October 2026.

Do I need to book East Coast tours in advance?

For K’gari and the Whitsundays, yes in December and January, and a few days ahead the rest of the year. Booking them as a package locks the big tours in while leaving dates open: choose a date for each one when you’re ready.

Which is better, a 2-day or 3-day K’gari tour?

Three days gets you further up the island and more time at the lakes; two days covers Lake McKenzie, Eli Creek, the Maheno wreck and Central Station for less. Our K’gari 2-day vs 3-day guide compares them.
