Overview

If your budget is tight, these are the two adventures to keep. Two days driving a 4WD in convoy across K'gari, the world's largest sand island, with a night in a beachfront camp, then a full day under sail in the Whitsundays with a snorkel on the fringing reef and two hours on the Langford Island sandbar.

This is an activities-only package: the price covers the two tours and nothing you'd have to pay for twice. Getting between Rainbow Beach and Airlie Beach and your hostel beds are up to you (a Greyhound pass or the overnight bus does it), which is how the price stays this low. The package price is simply the two tours added together at today's prices, so you never pay more than booking each one with us on its own. Book once, choose a date for each adventure now or later, and a real person on our team books both and sends you the confirmations.

Itinerary at a glance

K'gari Days 1–2 Airlie Beach Days 3–4
Your route, day by day
1 Day 1 · K'gari, 4WD convoy across the sand (days 1–2)

Sleep in Rainbow Beach the night before: the briefing is at 7am, where you're put into vehicle groups and taught the sand-driving basics. Then it's onto the barge and across to K'gari, sharing the 4WD driving in convoy behind your lead guide. Float Eli Creek, climb around the SS Maheno wreck, walk the Central Station rainforest and swim in Lake McKenzie. The night is in an enclosed beachfront camp with dinner, music and power to charge your phone. Back in Rainbow Beach on the afternoon of day 2.

3 Day 3 · North to Airlie Beach (your own pace)

The overnight bus from Rainbow Beach reaches Airlie Beach the next morning, or take a few days and stop at Bundaberg, Agnes Water or Rockhampton on the way. This leg isn't part of the package, which is why it's this cheap: use a Greyhound pass, a one-way ticket or a campervan.

4 Day 4 · Whitsundays day sail

Check in at the Coral Sea Marina for a full day under sail: snorkel the fringing reef in a stinger suit, eat lunch on deck, then spend about two hours on the Langford Island sandbar, where turtles cruise the shallows. Sunset sail back into Airlie.

Common questions about this trip

  • What's included in the price?

The two tours: a 2-day, 1-night K'gari 4WD tag-along from Rainbow Beach (with the beach camp, meals, ferry, fuel and permits) and a full-day Whitsundays sail from Airlie Beach (with lunch, snorkel gear and stinger suits). Transport between the two and your hostel nights are not included, so you only pay for what you don't already have.
  • How is the package priced?

It's the two tours added together at today's prices, rounded down to the nearest dollar ending in 9. So the package never costs more than booking each tour with us separately, and if either tour's price changes, the package changes with it.
  • Why doesn't it include a bus pass or hostels?

Most backpackers already have one: a Greyhound pass, a campervan, or cheap flights. Bundling a bus pass you don't need is how 'cheap' packages get expensive. If you want one, add a Greyhound East Coast pass from our bus passes page and we'll book it alongside.
  • Do I have to do them back to back?

No. Pick a start date for each adventure at checkout, or leave either open and choose later. Leave a few days between them if you want to stop along the way.
  • Can I do it in reverse, Airlie Beach first?

Yes. Choose the Whitsundays date first and the K'gari date later; the tours don't care which way you're travelling.
  • Do I have to drive on K'gari?

Only if you want to. It's a tag-along, so the drivers in your vehicle share the 4WD driving behind a lead guide, and you're placed into vehicle groups at the briefing. Drivers need a full licence; ask us about driver age before you book if you're under 21.
  • How does this compare with other 'budget packages'?

Check what the headline price includes. Many East Coast 'from' prices are activities only, like this one, and the version with a bus pass and beds costs a lot more. We compare them in our guide to cheap East Coast backpacker packages.
  • What if I need to change dates?

Each tour follows its own operator's change and cancellation terms, which we pass on as they are and confirm with you before you pay. Message us and we'll move what can be moved.
  • What's the cancellation policy?

Cancellation terms for this trip are set by the operator and confirmed on your booking voucher. Refunds mirror the operator's policy, if they can refund, so can we. Wanderlust handles the refund for you, refunds mirror the operator's terms 1:1 (including if the operator cancels) and we chase it on your behalf. Message us for the exact day-by-day terms before you book.
