Overview

There's a thing that happens around day three on K'gari: you stop planning and start living on island time, swims when it's hot, drives when it's not, dinner when the sun says so. The five-day hire is built for exactly that state of mind.

Your vehicle is a lifted Toyota Landcruiser with automatic transmission, kitted with recovery gear and covered by an included barge transfer, with an audio guide narrating the island's stories as you roam. Five days means Lake McKenzie, Eli Creek, the Champagne Pools and the Maheno wreck without ever sharing them at peak hour, go early, go late, go twice. It also means reaching the stretches of the east coast that day-trippers physically cannot.

Permit, food and fuel are yours to sort; up to five people share the vehicle and the costs. Every driver must be over 25 with at least three years' driving experience. This is the longest hire on offer, and the one people book after their first trip taught them three days wasn't enough.

Take the wheel and explore K'gari at your own pace in your own 4WD. Swim in the turquoise water of Lake McKenzie, float down Eli Creek and soak in the bubbling Champagne Pools. Wander the rainforest, see the Maheno Shipwreck and drive past the rainbow cliffs of the Coloured Sands. You also choose a few more lakes to visit: Birrabeen, Boomanjin, Garawongara, Basin or Allom. With a comfy base each night and your own 4WD by day, you have everything you need for an island escape. Your hire includes a fully equipped 4WD (5 days), return barge transfers, island tips and a safety briefing, and an audio guide. Every driver must be over 25 with at least three years' driving experience.
