The fourth option is different again: a boat day on the remote west coast with humpback whale watching in Platypus Bay. It is not a 4WD tour and does not visit the eastern beach.

Why start from Hervey Bay
Choose Hervey Bay if you want a bed rather than a tent, if you are flying in (the town has an airport), or if you want K'gari and the whales in one stop. The sheltered water of Platypus Bay, between the mainland and the island's west coast, is where humpbacks rest on their way south, roughly July to November.
The trade-off is distance: the eastern beach is a drive across the island from the barge, where Rainbow Beach tours land straight on it. Hervey Bay tours offer free pickups from selected accommodation, so check the tour page before you book a bed.
How to choose a Hervey Bay K'gari tour
Drive it yourself: the K'gari PINK 4WD Tag-Along, 2 Days from Hervey Bay is a convoy of pink Toyota Prados behind a lead guide, with licensed drivers taking turns, a beach house with hot showers, all meals and snacks, and solo travellers matched into a crew.
Three days, beach house: the K'gari 3-Day 4WD Escape Ex Hervey Bay is a small group of up to 21, with two nights in a private beach house at Eurong on the eastern beach, three lunches, two breakfasts and two dinners, the chance to drive the tour 4WD with no previous experience, and no single supplement.
Three days, someone else drives: the K'gari Getaway Tour (Private Triple) is guided 4WD coach touring with one night at a resort on the west coast and one on the eastern beach. It covers both coasts, including Lake McKenzie, Lake Wabby, Central Station, Eli Creek and the Maheno. Breakfasts and lunches are included; dinners are your own.
One day on the water: the Remote K'gari (Fraser Island) & Whale Experience is nine hours by boat to the west coast creeks for kayaking, snorkelling and tubing, then whale watching in Platypus Bay. In-water whale swims happen only when conditions allow and are not guaranteed.
Best time to go and what to bring
The 4WD tours run year-round. April to November brings milder days and firmer sand, and July to November is whale season in Hervey Bay. Summer is hotter and wetter but the lakes are at their best.
Bring swimmers, a towel (the 3-day beach house trip does not supply them), sunscreen, insect repellent and a warm layer for the evening. Tides set the order of stops. Swim in the lakes and creeks, not the surf, and keep your distance from the dingoes.

How do you get from Hervey Bay to K'gari?
By barge from River Heads, just south of Hervey Bay, to the island's west coast. The 4WD tours on this page include the barge, and the boat day leaves by boat with pickup from selected Hervey Bay accommodation.
Can I sleep in a bed on a K'gari tour from Hervey Bay?
Yes. The 2-day tag-along and the 3-day Escape both use beach houses with hot showers and real bathrooms, and the Getaway uses resort hotel rooms. If you want to camp under canvas, the Rainbow Beach tag-alongs are the ones.
Will I see whales on a K'gari tour from Hervey Bay?
Your best chance is the Remote K'gari & Whale Experience, which spends part of the day in Platypus Bay. Humpbacks are in the bay roughly July to November. On the 4WD tours, whales are sometimes seen from Indian Head in season, but that is a bonus.
Do I have to drive on a Hervey Bay K'gari tour?
Only if you want to. On the pink 2-day tag-along licensed drivers take turns, on the 3-day Escape driving is optional, and on the Getaway and the boat day the crew does all of it.
