Overview

K'gari tours split into two camps, literally: the ones where you sleep in a tent and the ones where you don't. This is the second kind. Three days of 4WD exploring with a maximum of 18 guests, and each night a private beach house on the island's Eastern Beach at Eurong, with proper bathrooms, hot showers and shared rooms.

The route hits the lot: Central Station's rainforest and the Wanggoolba Creek boardwalk, Lake Wabby, then a big beach-drive day up the Eastern Beach to Eli Creek, the Maheno shipwreck, the Pinnacles, Cathedral Beach, Lake Allom and Champagne Pools, with Lake McKenzie on the last morning. Eligible guests can take the wheel of the 4WD after a full safety briefing, no previous experience needed. Tides and weather call the order.

Meals are fresh and wholesome: three lunches, two dinners, two breakfasts plus snacks, with dietaries catered on request. Return ferry, National Park permits and pick-up from selected Hervey Bay accommodation are included, solo travellers pay no single supplement, and private room or private 4WD upgrades are available. Towels, parking and luggage storage cost extra. Drop-offs back in Hervey Bay are limited and don't include the bus station, so budget a taxi.

Itinerary at a glance

1 Day 1 · Ferry, Central Station and Lake Wabby

Sample itinerary; meals and order are subject to change, dietaries and tides. Complimentary pick-ups from 7:00am to the Hervey Bay depot, drivers' briefing at 7:30am, ferry around 9:00am, on K'gari by about 10:00am. Explore Central Station with a Welcome to Country, then on to the private beach house at Eurong for lunch (burritos with salad and tortillas). Afternoon at Lake Wabby, or Lake Birrabeen if tide conditions require. Back to the beach house to relax, shower and eat (a cooked dinner such as a stir fry or curry), with an optional evening beach walk under the stars, weather permitting.

2 Day 2 · The big beach drive

Optional sunrise over the beach, then continental breakfast (cereal, muesli, fruit, bread and spreads). An early start for the big beach-drive day, weather and tide permitting: Eli Creek, the Maheno shipwreck, the Pinnacles, Cathedral Beach, Lake Allom and Champagne Pools, with lunch (salad or falafel wraps) at Cathedral Beach or Lake Allom depending on the tide. Stop at the resort shop for drinks on the way back. Dinner is a pasta night with garlic bread (veggie and vegan options available), followed by an optional night walk.

3 Day 3 · Lake McKenzie and the barge home

Another sunrise over the Eastern Beach, then breakfast (cooked or continental). Pack up for lake day: Lake McKenzie, departing by 11:30am, then the Central Station Wanggoolba Creek boardwalk and lunch (salad or falafel wraps). Arrive at Kingfisher Resort or Wanggoolba Creek by 2:00 to 2:30pm for the barge at 2:30 to 3:00pm, back at the Hervey Bay depot by about 4pm. Drop-offs are limited (one guide can drop around eight guests) and don't include the bus station, so organise a taxi if you're heading there.
