Short answer
For most backpackers the pick is a 3-day 4WD tag-along from Rainbow Beach or Noosa, where you drive the 4WD yourself in a guided convoy and camp on the beach, from $599. If you want a real bed, the beach-house versions start from $649. If you only have a day, the K’gari Day Tour (Rainbow to Rainbow) from $279 covers the icons without the tent.
Prices are per person in AUD (4WD hire is priced per listing; the tour page shows how many people it covers), from our current listings (October 2026), and can change. Every tour in one list, sorted by today’s price, with what costs extra: K’gari tours by price.
Every K’gari tour is four decisions: where you leave from, whether you drive or get driven, where you sleep, and how many days you give it.

By departure point
Rainbow Beach
The southern gateway and the backpacker default, with the deepest line-up: the K’gari Day Tour (Rainbow to Rainbow) from $279, the Dingo’s K’gari 2-Day 4WD Tag-Along from Rainbow Beach from $499 the Dingo’s K’gari 3-Day 4WD Tag-Along from Rainbow Beach from $579 and the K’gari (Fraser Island) 3-Day Adventure from Rainbow Beach from $599 which bundles hostel nights in town on its package tiers. The two Noosa tours also pick up here.
Who it suits Anyone doing the East Coast by bus, and anyone who wants the widest choice of departures. Every Rainbow Beach departure is compared on one page: K’gari tours from Rainbow Beach.
Hervey Bay
The northern gateway, and the only place with a tour on the island’s west coast. The tours skew to comfort: the K’gari PINK 4WD Tag-Along, 2 Days from Hervey Bay from $649 sleeps you in a beach house with hot showers and matches solo travellers into crews; the K’gari 3-Day 4WD Escape Ex Hervey Bay from $719 does two beach-house nights at Eurong with no single supplement; the K’gari Getaway Tour (Private Triple) from $749 is the resort-and-coach option across both coasts. The Remote K’gari (Fraser Island) & Whale Experience is a boat day on the quiet western side: humpbacks in Platypus Bay, no Lake McKenzie.
Who it suits A bed rather than a tent, a private room, or the whale side if you have already seen the icons. All four are compared on K’gari tours from Hervey Bay.
Noosa
Two tours leave from Noosa, both with a Rainbow Beach pickup if you are already up the coast: the K’gari Premium Nature Day Tour from Noosa or Rainbow Beach from $275, and the K’gari 3-Day Tag-Along Safari from Noosa or Rainbow Beach from $599, for 18 to 35s only, max 4 vehicles. The 4WD hire packages collect from Noosaville. Our Noosa backpacker guide covers the town.
Who it suits People basing themselves in Noosa, and anyone who wants the 18–35 crowd guaranteed.
Brisbane day trip
The Fraser Island 4WD Exclusive Tour from $519 is the big single-day mission from Brisbane City: Double Island Point’s beach, the ferry, 75 Mile Beach and a Lake McKenzie swim. The Fraser Island 2-Night 4WD Adventure (Camping) from $729 is the three-day version with an eco guide driving.
Who it suits Short-stay visitors with a Brisbane base. If you are travelling the coast anyway, Rainbow Beach sits right by the barge to the island.
By format
Tag-along: you drive, the guide leads
The classic backpacker format: a lead guide drives the front vehicle and you take turns at the wheel behind it. Fuel, ferries, permits and a safety briefing are included on every tag-along we list, and no previous 4WD experience is required. Tours differ on group size (16 on the Rainbow Beach 2-day, up to 34 on the 3-day Rainbow Beach tour, max 4 vehicles on the Noosa safari) and where you sleep. Our tag-along tour diary covers what the days feel like.
Who it suits 18 to 35s, solo travellers (the convoy is the social part), anyone who wants to say they drove 75 Mile Beach.
Guided: someone else drives
The K’gari Day Tour (Rainbow to Rainbow), both Brisbane tours and the K’gari Getaway Tour (Private Triple) put a guide at the wheel of a purpose-built 4WD or 4WD coach. The K’gari 3-Day 4WD Escape Ex Hervey Bay sits in between: guide-led, with the chance to drive the tour 4WD.
Who it suits Non-drivers, mixed-age groups (all ages welcome), and anyone who would rather look out the window than concentrate on soft sand.
Self-drive 4WD hire
K’gari 4WD Hire, 3 Days, K’gari 4WD Hire, 4 Days and K’gari 4WD Hire, 5 Days, quoted on enquiry: a lifted automatic Landcruiser with recovery gear, barge transfer and audio guide, nothing else. Vehicle access permit, fuel, food and camping are on you, and the listing is built around up to five people sharing one vehicle. Every driver must be over 25 with at least three years’ driving experience. Permits, tides and the 3 vs 4 vs 5 day choice are covered on our Fraser Island 4WD hire page.
Who it suits A crew of four or five who already travel together, have a licence and a plan, and want the island without a schedule.
One-day tour
Rainbow Beach from $279 for the icons, Brisbane from $519 for the long-haul version, Hervey Bay’s seasonal west-coast whale day. All include lunch.
Who it suits Tight itineraries and people not sold on camping.
By accommodation
Camping
Twin-share tents at enclosed beach camps metres from the surf, with mat, sleeping bag and pillow supplied on the Rainbow Beach tag-alongs (the Noosa safari supplies tent, mattress and pillows; sleeping bag hire is a $20 refundable deposit). The Noosa camping safari uses a private dingo-fenced camp with a campfire.
Who it suits Budget travellers and anyone for whom the campfire is the point.
Real beds
The K’gari PINK 4WD Tag-Along, 2 Days from Hervey Bay from $649 and K’gari 3-Day 4WD Escape Ex Hervey Bay from $719 use beach houses in shared rooms with proper bathrooms.
Who it suits People who want the tag-along days but not the tent nights.
Private rooms and resorts
The K’gari Getaway Tour (Private Triple) from $749 is the only listing with private rooms: one resort night on each coast, breakfasts, morning teas and lunches in, dinner at your own cost. Self-drive hire is the other route to privacy.
Who it suits Couples, trios and anyone who has done enough dorms.
By length
One day
Lake McKenzie, Eli Creek, the Maheno wreck and 75 Mile Beach from Rainbow Beach or Brisbane, or the whale side from Hervey Bay. No sunset on the island, no Lake Wabby.
Who it suits Short on time or short on enthusiasm for tents.
Two days
One night on the island. The Dingo’s K’gari 2-Day 4WD Tag-Along from Rainbow Beach from $499 hits Lake McKenzie, Eli Creek, the Maheno and the Central Station rainforest; the K’gari PINK 4WD Tag-Along, 2 Days from Hervey Bay from $649 does similar with a beach house.
Who it suits Squeezing K’gari into a bus-pass schedule. The 3-day Rainbow Beach tag-along is from $579, against $499 for the 2-day, so if you can spare the night, spare it.
Three days
Two nights, and time to add Lake Wabby, Indian Head and the Champagne Pools. This is where most of the field sits, from $579 camping to $719 in a beach house.
Who it suits Almost everyone. It is the length the island was built for.
Four or five days
Only the 4WD hire packages go this long, for the quiet corners the convoys never reach.
Who it suits Self-sufficient crews with their own gear and no bus to catch.
If K’gari is one half of a bigger Queensland plan, the K’gari + Whitsundays Combo from $1,499 pairs a 3-day tag-along with a Whitsundays sail, transfer and nights between pre-booked.
FAQs
Which K’gari tour is best for solo travellers? Any tag-along: the convoy puts you in a 4WD crew from the first morning. The Hervey Bay PINK tour matches solo travellers into crews; the Hervey Bay 3-day escape has no single supplement.
Do I need 4WD experience to drive on a tag-along? No. Every tag-along we list includes a safety briefing, and the Hervey Bay escape states no previous experience is required. You do need a licence.
Is a 2-day or 3-day tour better? Three days if you can. From Rainbow Beach it is $499 versus $579, and the third day buys Lake Wabby and the northern end of the island.
Can I do K’gari as a day trip? Yes: Rainbow Beach from $279, Brisbane from $519, or Hervey Bay’s seasonal whale day (west coast and whales, not Lake McKenzie). Ferry, lunch and permits are included on the Rainbow Beach and Brisbane day tours.
Which tours are 18 to 35s only? The two Noosa tours (18 to 35s) and the Rainbow Beach 3-Day Adventure with hostel tiers (18 to 30s). The day tours, Brisbane tours and Hervey Bay tours are all ages welcome.
What about vehicle damage if I drive? Tag-alongs list a liability excess for drivers with optional paid reductions, for example $25 to reduce to a $1,500 excess or $50 to reduce to $500 on the Rainbow Beach 2-day.
