Overview

The quickest way to really do K'gari is to drive it. This tag-along puts you behind the wheel of a 4WD in a guided convoy, after a morning briefing in Rainbow Beach that covers exactly how to handle the sand. Then it's across on the ferry and up the eastern beach, the island's own highway, speed limits and all.

Day one runs north: morning tea at a freshwater creek, the story of the Maheno Shipwreck and its wartime life as a hospital ship, lunch wherever your guide finds the best spot, then a swim and float at crystal-clear Eli Creek before camp. Day two heads inland to the rainforest at Central Station, with a 1.8km walk beside Wanggoolba Creek to the towering satinay trees of Pile Valley, then the main event: Boorangoora (Lake McKenzie), white sand and impossibly clear water, before the drive back to the ferry.

You sleep in an enclosed campsite metres from the beach, with a twin-share tent, mat, sleeping bag and pillow supplied and a covered camp area with music, a kitchen and power for your phone. Meals (dietaries catered with notice), ferries, 4WD fuel, park and vehicle permits and luggage storage in Rainbow Beach are all in the price.

Itinerary at a glance

1 Day 1 · Rainbow Beach to the eastern beach

Wake up early for the 7am briefing at the Rainbow Beach meeting point, where you are put into groups, sort out luggage storage and learn to drive safely on sand. Then it is across on the barge, watching for dolphins, and onto K'gari, the world's largest sand island. You drive north along the eastern beach, the island's very own highway with speed limits, and stop at a freshwater creek along the way. Visit the Maheno Shipwreck to hear its story, including its time as a hospital ship in wartime. Lunch is wherever your guide picks the best spot, and the afternoon finishes with a swim at crystal-clear Eli Creek before you head to camp, a few metres from the beach, for dinner, drinks and tales by the fire.

Walk beside beautiful Wanggoolba Creek while your guide shares its logging history and Indigenous significance, then take the 1.8 km self-guided walk through the rainforest to meet your guide at Pile Valley. A short drive brings you to Boorangoora (Lake McKenzie), arguably the most picturesque spot on the island, for swimming and lazing on pristine sand. After lunch you head back along the eastern beach to the barge at Inskip Point, arriving at the Rainbow Beach meeting point between 3:30pm and 4:30pm.

"This is a trip you don’t want to miss! … Safety is definitely a priority with this company which also put the groups mind at rest with safety briefings at the start before going to the island as well as daily itinerary’s on what we would be doing. … This is the best trip I have done while travelling along the east coast."
