The Wanderlust crew · Updated · 7 min read

Short answer: the best-value way to camp on K’gari (Fraser Island) is a 3-day, 2-night 4WD tag-along from Rainbow Beach or Noosa, which bundles the 4WD, fuel, barge, permits, tents and most meals into one price. Our 3-day camping tours run from $579 per person: the Dingo’s 3-Day Tag-Along is $579, the Pippies 3-Day Adventure is $599 and the Island Expeditions 3-Day Safari is $599. With one night to spare, the Dingo’s 2-Day Tag-Along is $499. On 27 October 2026 another backpacker booking site listed the same Dingo’s 3-day at A$589, Pippies 3-day from A$659 and Dingo’s 2-day at A$549.

Camping on the island yourself is cheaper only for a full car of drivers aged 25 or over: the Queensland Parks camping permit is $7.75 per person per night, but the 4WD, barge and vehicle permit come on top.

Our prices are per person in AUD and update from our live listings. Other sites’ prices are what they showed on 27 October 2026, before any cashback or credit offers, and they change.

Dingo’s 3-Day Tag-Along: the classic party camp

K’gari 3-Day 4WD Tag-Along from Rainbow Beach, from $579. Up to 34 people in a guided convoy, with a compulsory 7am briefing in Rainbow Beach. You camp two nights in an enclosed campsite metres from the beach, in twin-share tents, with an undercover camp area, music and power to charge your phone. Lake McKenzie and Lake Wabby are on the route.

Included: the 4WD, fuel, return ferry, all camping, national park and vehicle permits, tents and sleeping gear, and meals. Damage liability reduction is an optional extra.

Who it suits: solo travellers who want the biggest, most social group, and anyone who wants the lowest price on three days.

Pippies 3-Day Adventure: camping with hot showers

K’gari (Fraser Island) 3-Day Adventure from Rainbow Beach, from $599. Ages 18 to 35, leaving Rainbow Beach at 7am. Day one is the barge from Inskip Point, 75 Mile Beach, Lake McKenzie and Central Station. Day two is the Maheno shipwreck, the Pinnacles, Eli Creek and the Champagne Pools. Day three is Lake Wabby, back in Rainbow Beach between about 1pm and 5:30pm depending on tides.

Included: 4WD hire and insurance, two nights at a permanent campsite with hot showers and flushing toilets, sleeping bag, pillow and mattress, 2 breakfasts, 3 lunches and 2 dinners, park permits, the barge and free luggage storage. Packages with dorm nights in Rainbow Beach before or after are on the tour page.

Who it suits: anyone who wants the camp nights without a cold bucket shower. It is the most comfortable of the camping tag-alongs.

Island Expeditions 3-Day Safari: the small group from Noosa

K’gari 3-Day Tag-Along Safari from Noosa or Rainbow Beach, from $599. Ages 18 to 35, up to 8 people per 4WD and no more than four vehicles. The convoy leaves Noosa and picks up in Rainbow Beach on the way. You camp two nights at a private, dingo-fenced beach campsite in 2-person tents and finish with a Lake McKenzie swim, back in Noosa by about 5pm.

Included: 4WD, fuel and ferries, park and camping fees, driver training and a lead guide, tents with mattresses and pillows, all main meals except day-one breakfast and day-three dinner, and a post-trip party and meal deal back in Noosa. Sleeping bag hire is a $20 refundable deposit.

Who it suits: anyone starting in Noosa, and anyone who wants a smaller group than the Rainbow Beach camps.

One night only: Dingo’s 2-Day Tag-Along

K’gari 2-Day 4WD Tag-Along from Rainbow Beach, from $499. Groups of 8 to 16, one night at an enclosed beach camp in a twin-share tent with mat, sleeping bag and pillow, all meals, ferries, fuel, camping and vehicle permits. You see Eli Creek, the Maheno, Central Station and Lake McKenzie. The standard cover leaves you liable for damage, with $25 or $50 options to cut the excess to $1,500 or $500.

Who it suits: tight itineraries. You lose Lake Wabby and the Champagne Pools, and the extra day on the 3-day costs much less than the first two. More in K’gari 2-day vs 3-day tour.

No licence? The guided camping tour

K’gari 2-Night 4WD Adventure (Camping), from $729. Three days from Brisbane with an eco guide who does all the driving, up to 20 travellers, and the full list of stops: Lake McKenzie, Central Station, Eli Creek, the Maheno, Lake Wabby, Indian Head and the Champagne Pools. Most meals are included; you buy your own lunch on days two and three.

Who it suits: anyone without a full licence, anyone who doesn’t want to drive on sand, and anyone starting in Brisbane.

What camping on K’gari yourself costs

You can camp on the island without a tour. Queensland Parks and Wildlife Service fees, checked on 25 October 2026:

CostAmount
Camping permit$7.75 per person per night
K’gari vehicle access permit, 1 month or less$61.80 per vehicle
Combined K’gari and Cooloola permit (driving up the beach from Noosa)$99.25 per vehicle

Book campsites on QPWS K’gari camping and the vehicle permit through QPWS vehicle access permits.

The permits are the cheap part. You also need a high-clearance 4WD (two-wheel drives are not allowed on the island), the vehicle barge, fuel, food and camping gear. Hire companies usually want every driver to be 25 or over. On one Hervey Bay operator’s published rates, a 2-day, 1-night self-drive with camping works out at about $645 each for two people and $380 each for five, against $499 for the 2-day tag-along. The full breakdown is in K’gari 4WD hire vs tour, and the vehicle rules are in can you take your own car to K’gari.

Bottom line: one to three people, or anyone under 25, should book a tag-along. Four or five confident drivers over 25 with their own gear can camp for less.

How to get the best camping deal

  • Compare what’s included, not just the price. Every tour above includes the 4WD, fuel, barge and permits. Check meals (Island Expeditions skips two) and sleeping bags (a $20 deposit on Island Expeditions).
  • Check the price on the day. Tag-along prices move with sales and season. The live list is on K’gari tour prices.
  • Add the damage cover. Sand, salt water and tides are hard on 4WDs, and the standard cover leaves you liable. The optional excess reduction is cheap next to the excess.
  • Book the Rainbow Beach hostel with the tour. The Pippies packages add dorm nights before or after, and K’gari 3-day tour and Rainbow Beach hostel packages lists them.
  • Found it cheaper elsewhere? Our Price Match Promise says we’ll do our best to beat it on an identical product.

On our listings today it is the Dingo’s 3-Day Tag-Along at $579 for three days, and the Dingo’s 2-Day Tag-Along at $499 for two. Each price covers the 4WD, fuel, barge, permits, tents and meals.

How much does it cost to camp on Fraser Island?

A Queensland Parks camping permit is $7.75 per person per night, and the K’gari vehicle access permit is $61.80 for up to a month. The 4WD, barge, fuel, food and camping gear are on top, which is why a camping tour from $499 is usually cheaper for one to three people.

Can you camp on K’gari without a tour?

Yes. Book a QPWS camping permit for the campsite, buy a vehicle access permit, and take a high-clearance 4WD across on the barge. Hire companies usually want drivers aged 25 or over.

Are meals included on K’gari camping tours?

Yes on all of them, with gaps on some. Pippies includes 2 breakfasts, 3 lunches and 2 dinners. Island Expeditions includes all main meals except day-one breakfast and day-three dinner. The guided 2-night camping tour leaves lunch on days two and three to you.

Do I need a driver’s licence for a K’gari tag-along?

To drive, yes: tag-alongs usually take drivers from 21 (a few set 23) with a full licence held for at least a year. Anyone who doesn’t qualify can ride as a passenger. The rules are in licence and age rules for K’gari tag-alongs.

Are the camps fenced from dingoes?

The Dingo’s tours use an enclosed beach camp, and Island Expeditions uses a private dingo-fenced beach campsite. Pippies uses a permanent campsite with hot showers and flushing toilets.
