Short answer: the hire price is not the deal. A 3-day self-drive 4WD from Rainbow Beach is advertised at A$690 per vehicle, but once you add the barge, vehicle permit, camping gear, camping permits, fuel and food, two people pay about A$630 each. The Dingo’s K’gari 3-Day 4WD Tag-Along is $579 per person with the 4WD, fuel, barge, permits, tents and meals included, and you still drive. Travelling solo or as a couple, the tag-along is the better 4WD deal. With four or five drivers sharing one car, self-drive works out cheaper, at about A$335 to A$385 each.
Prices are in AUD. Our tour prices update from our live listings. The self-drive figures are one Rainbow Beach hire operator’s published rates (valid 1 March to 18 December 2026) and Queensland Parks fees, checked on 27 October 2026. Fuel and food are our estimates.

Every cost of a 3-day self-drive from Rainbow Beach
| Cost | Amount | Who pays |
|---|---|---|
| 4WD hire, 3 days, up to 5 people | A$690 | Shared |
| Return barge, Inskip Point | A$140 | Shared |
| K’gari vehicle access permit | A$61.80 | Shared |
| Camping gear hire | A$30 a day for 1–2 people, A$60 for 3–4, A$75 for 5–6 | Shared |
| Camping permit, 2 nights | A$15.50 (A$7.75 a night) | Each |
| Fuel (you return the car full) | about A$100 (estimate) | Shared |
| Food and water for 3 days | about A$75 (estimate) | Each |
Added up and split across the car:
| People in the 4WD | Self-drive, each | 3-day tag-along, each |
|---|---|---|
| 1 | about A$1,170 | $579 |
| 2 | about A$630 | $579 |
| 3 | about A$480 | $579 |
| 4 | about A$385 | $579 |
| 5 | about A$335 | $579 |
That self-drive total still leaves out two things. The standard damage excess on the hire is A$2,500, and cutting it to A$1,000 costs A$75 a day, which adds about A$110 each for two people over three days. The operator also holds a refundable bond of A$1,000 to A$2,500 on your card and can charge up to A$100 for cleaning. Peak-season and public-holiday surcharges may apply.
Why the advertised hire price misleads
Hire prices are quoted per vehicle and before the barge, so they look cheap next to a per-person tour price. The barge and vehicle permit alone add A$201.80 to any self-drive, whatever the length. Most “from” prices also leave out camping gear, which you need unless you’ve booked a resort room on the island. Compare the total per person, not the headline.
A tag-along price is per person and already includes all of that. You take turns driving a 4WD in a guided convoy, the guide plans around the tides and runs the camp, and the meals are cooked for you.
Who should hire, and who should book a tag-along
Self-drive hire is the deal if there are four or five of you, at least one driver meets the hire age rule (this operator takes drivers from 21 with two years on a full licence; many others want 25), and someone is happy to read a tide table and dig a 4WD out of soft sand.
A tag-along is the deal if you’re solo or a couple, you’re young or new to sand driving, you’d rather not carry a A$2,500 excess, or you want a ready-made group. The Dingo’s 2-day is $499 and the 3-day $579; Pippies is the comfortable one, with hot showers at camp; Island Expeditions is the small group, with a maximum of four vehicles.

One Rainbow Beach operator advertises A$690 per vehicle for three days (March to December 2026), for up to five people. On top of that you pay the A$140 return barge, the A$61.80 vehicle permit, camping gear from A$30 a day, A$7.75 per person per night to camp, and your own fuel and food.
Does a K’gari 4WD hire include the barge and permit?
Usually not. The hire price normally covers the vehicle, recovery gear and compulsory third-party insurance. The barge, the vehicle access permit, camping permits and fuel are extra. Tag-along tours include them.
Can I drive on a K’gari tag-along tour?
Yes. On a tag-along the guests drive the 4WDs in a convoy behind the guide’s vehicle, taking turns. Drivers usually need to be 21 or older with a full licence held for at least a year (some tours ask for 23), and anyone who doesn’t qualify can ride as a passenger.
