Sydney to Cairns
Noosa's glassy Everglades and Maggie's wild koalas, on top of every headline act.
The sweet spot: a Sydney harbour day, Byron surf school, then the two quiet showstoppers rushed itineraries skip (a canoe through the mirror-still Noosa Everglades and a couple of nights on Magnetic Island, where the koalas are wild and the sunsets are stupid) on top of every headline act. All 14 nights of beds, the overnight buses and the bus pass sorted.

Paddle the Noosa Everglades, water so still it prints the paperbarks back at you. Spot wild koalas dozing in the gums above Magnetic Island's Forts Walk. Then hit every headliner: Byron surf school, three days 4WDing K'gari, a Whitsundays sail and a full day on the outer Great Barrier Reef. Seventeen days between the Opera House and the outer reef, including the two stops rushed itineraries always cut.
It's semi-guided, so the big days run with a guide and other backpackers while the days between are unguided and solo, each stop yours to explore your own way. One booking covers the bus pass (overnight on the two longest hauls, so you wake up at the next stop), all 14 nights of beds and every adventure; it's open-dated and valid 12 months, and you can start from Sydney or Cairns and run it either direction. You book solo; the mates turn up along the way: on the boat, in the convoy, at the hostel bar. Seventeen days, six headline adventures, none of the big ones skipped.

Stop 1
One full Sydney day to find your feet: harbour ferry, Bondi dip, the Opera House lit up at dusk. Collect your bus pass and itinerary pack, then in the evening the overnight bus heads north, and you wake up in Byron.
Stop 2
Off the bus on the morning of day 2, with two nights to properly arrive. Learn to surf with a local school on beach breaks that forgive everything, catch sunrise from the Cape Byron lighthouse on mainland Australia's most easterly point, and let the markets, beach bars and drum-circle sunsets set the tempo. Humpbacks cruise past on migration June to November, and the hinterland waterfalls are an easy hop inland. Two nights in, Byron will feel like yours.
Stop 3
This is the stop rushed itineraries can't fit, and a big reason you booked the seventeen. Canoe the Noosa Everglades, one of only two everglade systems on earth, where tannin-dark water sits so still the paperbarks and sky double themselves on the surface. Then walk the national park's coastal track past dozing koalas and hidden coves to the longboarders at Tea Tree Bay, graze Hastings Street and swim off the calm main beach. A polished, mellow breather before the sand island roughs you up nicely. Day 4 is the coach north from Byron, day 5 the Everglades, and on the afternoon of day 6 the coach carries you on to Rainbow Beach for the night, a short walk from the briefing that starts K'gari the next morning.
Stop 4
Three days on the world's largest sand island, starting at a 7am briefing in Rainbow Beach, and you're driving. It's a tag-along safari: your crew shares the wheel of a 4WD in convoy, lead guide on the radio calling the lines through the soft stuff. Swim Lake McKenzie, silica-white rim, water an unreasonable blue, drift down crystal-clear Eli Creek, climb the rusting SS Maheno wreck, soak in the Champagne Pools and hike the sandblow to Lake Wabby. Nights: beach camping, fire, a proper feed, stars by the thousand, the odd dingo print by morning. Meals and camping gear sorted, bring or hire a sleeping bag. Back on the mainland mid-afternoon on day 9, you board the overnight bus to Airlie Beach.
Stop 5
The overnight bus drops you in Airlie Beach on the morning of day 10, gateway to the sail everyone measures the rest of the trip against. A full day for one lagoon swim, one marina sunset and an early-ish night, then on day 11 you board an ex-racing maxi yacht for two nights among the 74 Whitsunday Islands: snorkel the fringing reef over turtles and parrotfish, hike to the Hill Inlet lookout as the tide swirls turquoise sand into slow-moving art, and walk barefoot on Whitehaven Beach, 98% pure silica that squeaks with every step and stays cool underfoot. Back in Airlie on day 13 for one more night before the islands up north.
Stop 6
The island stop plenty of East Coast itineraries skip, and arguably the trip's sweetest. A short ferry from Townsville, 'Maggie' hands you an open-top Barbie car, yes, really, to loop its 23 bays, snorkel the fringing reef metres off Geoffrey Bay, and climb the Forts Walk at golden hour, where wild koalas doze in the gum forks above the trail. Granite boulders the size of houses, beaches with nobody on them, sunsets that fall straight into the sea. Two nights of island time before the final push north.
Stop 7
Ride north to Cairns on day 16, then save the biggest for last: a full day on the outer Great Barrier Reef on day 17, snorkelling over turtles, rays, giant clams and coral in colours that don't look real from above the water and look even less real from in it. Back on shore, the Cairns Esplanade lagoon and night markets are built for a final night with the mates you've collected since Sydney. Seventeen days, six headline adventures, none of the big ones skipped, fly home, stay on, or flip the map and run it back the other way.
Stop 1
Open with the biggest of them all. Day 1 is yours to land and settle into Cairns, because the reef boats leave in the morning: the Esplanade lagoon and night markets are built for meeting the dorm. Day 2 is a full day on the outer Great Barrier Reef, over turtles, rays, giant clams and coral in colours you'll struggle to describe afterwards, one of the seven natural wonders, ticked, snorkel in hand. Collect your bus pass and itinerary pack, and on day 3 ride south to Townsville for the ferry.
Stop 2
The island stop plenty of East Coast itineraries skip, and arguably the trip's sweetest. A short ferry from Townsville, 'Maggie' hands you an open-top Barbie car, yes, really, to loop its 23 bays, snorkel the fringing reef metres off Geoffrey Bay, and climb the Forts Walk at golden hour, where wild koalas doze in the gum forks above the trail. Granite boulders the size of houses, beaches with nobody on them, sunsets that fall straight into the sea. Two nights of island time, then down the coast to Airlie Beach.
Stop 3
A night in Airlie Beach at the lagoon and the marina at sunset, then on day 6 you step aboard an ex-racing maxi yacht for two nights threading the 74 Whitsunday Islands. Snorkel the fringing reef, hike to the Hill Inlet lookout where the tide swirls turquoise sand into shapes that look edited, and go barefoot on Whitehaven Beach, 98% pure silica sand that genuinely squeaks. Back on the dock late morning on day 8 with salt in your hair, and that evening the overnight bus carries you south to Rainbow Beach. Worth it.
Stop 4
Off the overnight bus into Rainbow Beach on the morning of day 9, with the day free to wander the town and a bed here tonight. At the 7am briefing on day 10 you're onto the world's largest sand island, driving it yourself, tag-along style, sharing the wheel of a 4WD in convoy while a lead guide calls the lines over the radio. Swim Lake McKenzie's silica-white shallows, float down Eli Creek's glass-clear current, scramble over the rusted SS Maheno wreck, fizz about in the Champagne Pools and hike the sandblow to Lake Wabby. Nights are beach camping: campfire, a proper feed, and 75-Mile Beach as tomorrow's highway. Meals and camping gear sorted, bring or hire a sleeping bag, then just drive and swim. Back at Rainbow Beach mid-afternoon on day 12, you've a bed here again that night, then on day 13 it's a short hop south to Noosa.
Stop 5
This is the stop rushed itineraries can't fit. The coach from Rainbow Beach lands you in Noosa on day 13, and day 14 is the Everglades: canoe one of only two everglade systems on earth, where tannin-dark water sits so still the paperbarks and sky double themselves on the surface. Then walk the national park's coastal track past dozing koalas and hidden coves to the longboarders at Tea Tree Bay, graze Hastings Street and swim off the calm main beach. A polished, mellow breather after the sand island roughed you up nicely. On day 15 the coach carries you on to Byron.
Stop 6
Off the coach on the afternoon of day 15, with a night in Byron to land and the next day to learn to surf with a local school on beach breaks that forgive everything. Catch sunrise from the Cape Byron lighthouse on mainland Australia's most easterly point, and let the markets, beach bars and drum-circle sunsets set the tempo. Humpbacks cruise past on migration June to November, and the hinterland waterfalls are an easy hop inland. On the evening of day 16 the overnight bus heads south, and you wake up in Sydney.
Stop 7
Off the overnight bus by breakfast on the last day, with the morning to finish in style: harbour ferry, Bondi dip, a last coffee with the mates you've collected since Cairns. Seventeen days, six headline adventures, none of the big ones skipped. Fly home or stay on.
