Western Australia's north-west is big, empty and hard to do without wheels, so this 10-day overland from Perth to Broome does the driving for you and fills the gaps with walks, snorkels and a lot of red dirt. It's billed for the fit and active, and the long days on the road (several over six hours) are the trade for reaching places most backpackers never get to.
The coast comes first: the Pinnacles in Nambung National Park, the Pink Lake at Port Gregory, Kalbarri's Nature's Window, Skywalk and the steep drop into Z-Bend Gorge, then Shell Beach and the Monkey Mia dolphins. Hamelin Pool's stromatolites, among the oldest living fossils on the planet, lead on to Coral Bay and Ningaloo Reef, with time in Exmouth and beach snorkelling in Cape Range National Park. Snorkel hire, manta ray and whale shark trips are optional extras here.
Then it's inland through the Pilbara to Karijini, where two full days go to the gorges: Dales Gorge, Fortescue Falls, Fern Pool, Weano and Hancock, with waterfalls and swimming holes at the bottom of them. Port Hedland's iron ore port and a station camp break the last leg before a stroll on 80 Mile Beach and a Broome sunset. Nine breakfasts, ten lunches and nine dinners, hostel beds for six nights and camping for three, and all park entries are covered; bring or pre-buy a sleeping bag.

Welcome to sunny Perth, where your overland journey begins. Meet your group early and leave the city, driving north to Nambung National Park to explore the Pinnacles, ancient rock sculptures that rise out of the desert. Journey on to Western Australia's own Pink Lake at Port Gregory, then continue through Geraldton to the quiet beach town of Kalbarri, where you stay the night.
Take a short drive into Kalbarri National Park and hike its diverse scenery, including the Kalbarri Skywalk overlooking the Murchison River Gorge and Nature's Window, plus a steep descent into Z-Bend Gorge. After lunch, visit Shell Beach, one of only two beaches in the world composed entirely of shells. Then get back on the road towards Denham and Shark Bay.
Head down to the beach this morning for the Monkey Mia dolphin experience, and stretch your legs on the idyllic shores around Francois Peron National Park. Next is Hamelin Pool, where you will see fascinating stromatolites, marine rock formations that are some of the world's oldest and largest living fossils. After a short break, continue up the highway through Carnarvon to Coral Bay, known as the Jewel of the Northwest.
Explore picturesque Coral Bay, home to the World Heritage listed Ningaloo Reef. Snorkel gear is available to hire at your own expense, or you could cruise the reef in a glass-bottom boat to see the life teeming below; the marine park is home to 250 species of coral and over 500 species of fish. An optional scenic flight over the reef is another way to see it. Other optional extras include a half-day manta ray snorkel, beach snorkelling and seasonal three-hour whale watching.
Spend the morning snorkelling right off the beach in the stunning Cape Range National Park. Depending on the time of year, you can snorkel or scuba dive in search of whale sharks and manta rays, or snorkel at Turquoise Bay (both at your own expense). Visit Vlamingh Head Lighthouse, one of the few places in Australia where you can see the sun both rise and set, then wander around the town of Exmouth.
Head inland through the vast cattle stations of the Pilbara, a sparsely populated region known for its red earth and rich mineral deposits. Pass through the iron ore town of Tom Price in the afternoon and continue to a campsite overlooking the Hamersley Range in Karijini. Before bed, look up: this is one of the best night skies you are ever likely to see.
Over the next two days, explore the almighty gorges of Karijini National Park. Formed over 2,500 million years ago, the Hamersley Ranges feature some of the most unusual landforms on Earth. Hike deep into the gorges, where you will find cascading waterfalls and freshwater holes made for swimming. Dales Gorge and Oxer Lookout, Fortescue Falls, Fern Pool, and Weano and Hancock Gorges are just some of the places you can visit. This part of the journey is a real highlight.
Head back into the gorges for a second day exploring this fascinating national park.
Leave Karijini and travel towards the coast (around four hours). Visit the iron ore port of Port Hedland, the second most populated town in the Pilbara, for a quick tour and an understanding of the scale of the iron ore industry. After lunch, continue to a nearby station, where you spend the last night of your trip.
The drive to Broome takes around six hours, with a leisurely break and a stroll along the immense 80 Mile Beach on the way. On arrival, say goodbye to your fellow travellers and enjoy an idyllic Broome sunset, a fitting end to your overland adventure. There are no more activities planned for the day.
