Overview

In 1629 the Dutch ship Batavia hit Morning Reef in the Abrolhos Islands, and what followed, mutiny, murder, a rescue and a reckoning, remains one of the most extraordinary true stories in Australian history. This flight takes you over where it happened, wrapped inside a two-hour scenic tour of one of WA's least-visited island chains.

From Kalbarri you fly out over the Coastal Cliffs of Gantheume Bay, 400 million years of red sedimentary rock meeting the Indian Ocean, before landing on East Wallabi Island for tea, coffee and a look around the coral reef scenery. The islands are seabird breeding grounds ringed by coral gardens, and the shallow water reads like a colour chart from the air.

The return leg crosses the atolls and the Batavia site itself. Two hours, a maximum of 14 passengers, and a story you'll be retelling at dinner for years.

"The views were unreal and gave us a proper sense of the area you just can’t get from the ground. We were also pointed out excellent snorkelling spots, which was a huge bonus and ended up shaping the rest of our day."
