Short answer: Monkey Mia is about 850 km north of Perth by road, roughly 9 hours of driving without stops, so almost everyone breaks it into two days with a night in Kalbarri or Geraldton. From Geraldton it is about 430 km (4.5 hours), from Kalbarri about 400 km (4 hours), and from Coral Bay about 580 km (6.5 hours). If you would rather not drive it, the Exmouth Explorer: Perth to Ningaloo, 7 Days from $2,399 and the Perth to Broome 10 Day Tour from $2,989 both spend a night at Monkey Mia with the morning dolphin visit included.
Distances are approximate road distances on the main sealed route. Tour prices are per person in AUD from our current listings (October 2026) and can change.
Distances to Monkey Mia
| From | Distance | Driving time (no stops) |
|---|---|---|
| Perth | about 850 km | about 9 hours |
| Geraldton | about 430 km | about 4.5 hours |
| Kalbarri | about 400 km | about 4 hours |
| Coral Bay | about 580 km (via Carnarvon) | about 6.5 hours |
| Denham | about 25 km | about 20 minutes |
Monkey Mia sits inside the Shark Bay World Heritage Area, on the far side of the Peron Peninsula from the highway. The last stretch leaves the North West Coastal Highway at the Overlander Roadhouse and runs out along the peninsula past Hamelin Pool, Shell Beach and the town of Denham. Add time for that detour when you plan the day; it is a dead end, so you drive it twice.
Perth to Monkey Mia in two days
The standard split is a night in Kalbarri, which puts the best stops on day one and leaves a shorter run to Shark Bay.
Day one, Perth to Kalbarri (about 575 to 600 km). Head up Indian Ocean Drive to the limestone spires of the Pinnacles in Nambung National Park, then follow the coast through Jurien Bay towards Geraldton. Just past Geraldton, detour to the bubblegum-pink Hutt Lagoon near Port Gregory, then sleep in Kalbarri.
Day two, Kalbarri to Monkey Mia (about 400 km direct, more with park stops). Go early into Kalbarri National Park for Nature’s Window, the Skywalk over the Murchison River gorge and the Z-Bend, then drive north and turn onto the peninsula. Stop at Hamelin Pool’s stromatolites, among the oldest life forms on Earth, and at Shell Beach, made entirely of tiny shells, before you reach Monkey Mia.
The Geraldton option. If you leave Perth late, Geraldton (about 420 km from Perth) is the easier halfway town, leaving about 430 km and 4.5 hours to Monkey Mia the next day. You give up the Kalbarri gorges unless you detour back for them.
What to do at Monkey Mia
- The morning dolphin visit. Wild bottlenose dolphins swim into the shallows at Monkey Mia most mornings. Be on the beach early; it is why you came.
- Eagle Bluff. A cliff-top boardwalk south of Denham with wide views over the bay.
- Francois Peron National Park. Red cliffs meeting white sand at the tip of the peninsula. Much of it is 4WD-only, so in a standard hire car or van, stay on the sealed roads.
- Shell Beach and Hamelin Pool. On the way in or out, if you skipped them on arrival.
One night is enough for the dolphins; two gives you time for the national park and a slower morning.
Driving it yourself
Self-drive works well on this route: the highway is sealed all the way to Monkey Mia, and our Perth to Broome campervan route plans the full Coral Coast with Shark Bay as a two-night stop. A few things to know before you go:
- North of Geraldton, fuel and supermarkets are hundreds of kilometres apart. Fill up at every roadhouse and carry water.
- Avoid driving at dawn and dusk, when kangaroos, livestock and road trains share the highway.
- Standard rental agreements usually bar unsealed roads, so the 4WD tracks in Francois Peron National Park are out in a normal van. If you want those tracks, our 4WD campervan hire guide covers what a 4WD rig costs and where you really need one.
- Perth to Monkey Mia and back is about 1,700 km before side trips. A loop that carries on to Coral Bay or Exmouth adds far more, so count the driving days honestly.
