Julian Rocks Snorkel — Byron Bay's Underwater Wonderland

Julian Rocks is where warm tropical and cool temperate seas collide — meaning leopard sharks, manta rays, turtles, eagle rays and (in season) humpback whales all in one spot. Run by Out of The Blue Adventures with a marine biologist on the boat.

Common questions about this trip

  • Do I have to be a strong swimmer?

Yes — you need to be a competent swimmer (200m unassisted). The guide stays close but it's open ocean, not a pool. If you're rusty, the surface-snorkel format is forgiving but you do need to feel comfortable in deep water.
  • Will I actually see sharks?

Grey nurse and leopard sharks are residents at Julian Rocks. Both are harmless to humans. October-April is peak leopard shark season (they're literally on the sand below you). Grey nurses are around year-round in the caves.
  • What about whales?

June-November you'll often hear them singing underwater even when you can't see them. Sightings from the boat are common in those months. From May 2024 the law changed — you can't swim with them but you can see them surfacing.
  • How do I get to Brunswick Heads from Byron?

20-min drive north. Easiest: rideshare (~$30 each way) or grab the local bus ($5, but timing's awkward). Some hostels run a 6:45am shuttle. Mention you're going for Out of The Blue and other backpackers might split a car with you.
